Went for medical however...

A very close friend went for her medical, she genuinely has a bad leg and finds it hard in her everyday life.... Anyway to cut a long story short.. She's been on DLA for somewhat 10 years & suffers from depression, anxiety... only within the last few months she has had the courage (with help from jobcentre) trying to 'give something back' & along the way it hopefully help her mental health by getting out and meeting people. by doing some driving volunteer work.. this involves taking people to and from hospital, doctors etc. This is also by using her motability car(yes it's allowed providing she does not get paid for it, expenses excluded), and since she's been for this medical... She's panicking almost all the time, not eating properly and barely sleeping because she thinks she will 'fail' this medical and she will lose her motability car(which means this volunteer stuff would need to be ended) and be pushed out to work in her state(which from being her friend for years... I think could possibly drive her to suicide!!)

As a friend I can only sit back and watch her, try tell her it will be fine and she should pass the medical... However deep down I'm worried for her as I know how much this government is changing... Can anyone give me some advice or possible experience in this situation.

Cheers x

Do you know on what basis she gets her DLA Mobility?
  • I'm not 100% sure but I think it's for getting out and about. She does find it difficult to walk much. She keeps saying if she loses the car that's her life finished as that's her only way to get out really. :-(

A bad leg would not normally lead to a HRM award, I assume it is worse than that? Was the medical for DLA and not for IB/ ESA?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • What is IB/ESA ... sorry don't know much about these things. All I know is that the medical is for her Benefits.. Which she said she might lose the Motability car.

OK, we'll assume the medical was for a DLA renewal. As you don't know many details of her condition, I'm not sure what you want us to tell you?

  • Ideally I'd love you to tell me she's going to pass this medical therefor keep her Motability car, However I know you can't! I feel so worried for her and just wanted some advice... But your right when you say I don't know enough details!

A friend of mine wanted to volenteer for this role and was refused because you have to be able to walk to the patients front doors which could be upstairs or a long distance from the road, you must be able to assist the person that you are driving with doors etc. and getting a bank wheelchair from the medical establishment etc. my friend couldnt do this because of mobility problems so was told that they couldnt do thios role and was offered a role answering the phone etc.

As an aside if you can fulfil this role you shouldnt have a high rate mobility award for physical reasons.
  • I personally would like to see the end of people talking of "failing" and "passing" their medicals when it is precisely the other way around.

And certainly not for mental health reasons either.
