France internet dongle

Hi everyone, Looking to next year I was wondering if anyone bought a French mobile internet dongle this year. If so was it OK and how much did it cost?
I know there are UK ones which allow you to use them in France but they work out quite expensive for a few months. I know I could get internet via the phone line but as we will be at the end of a long line I can only get 0.5mb download and not enough upload to register on the sites I want to before they time out.

Don't expect it to be cheap.

There is the choice of taking an unlocked dongle with you, buying a Orange Mobicarte SIM and going through the pain of trying to use it without it draining all of your credit or forking out up to 59 euros for a modem and credit.

Thanks for that. Great answer, have you ever used any of them? Plus are they tied into a particular mobile network or do they work with any? There is no 3G coverage in our area.
