New website with GBBO

Hi all,

Firstly, sorry if this is in the wrong section.

I have recently started a business and when I went to set up a website I came across the GBBO website and thought that looks great, so went throught the process and got my domain secured and started up my site. Now there lies the problem, the sort of website you can create seems to be very basic. Can I now ditch the site GBBO set me up with and use my own with my domain?? I have now recieved confirmation from nomiet that I am the register owner of my domain.

I have no idea what so ever how to go about this so please any help in basic simple terms please.

Many thanks for your help

Phil

  • you need to purchase hosting to set up another website and then alter your nameservers from gbbo's to the new host.

    from gbbos website
"Using BT.com's address management system, you can change your DNS / nameserver details by logging in to gbbo.myportalexpress.com (using the details you were emailed when your address was registered) and then selecting 'manage domains'. From here find your address and in the 'actions' column choose 'nameservers'. On the page that follows you can update and save the nameserver details as required. Be careful, these details are vital for pointing your web address in the right direction!"

open a FREE a/c with 123reg.co.uk and transfer your domain to your a/c [ I have 100's with them]
when you choose a website try and keep domain in your a/c , some comps. charge you up to £25 to transfer, ...as a ''newbee'' 123reg is quite fair for website , also look at ..acorndomains.co.uk you can have someone who is a member of forum do a website for under £80 [ 6 pages if needed] any shark is soon outed by members so join free and ask questions ..you will have genuine unbiased answer....zee

Surely it would be easier to get this done professionally so you can sort out the business rather than spend hours on something someone could put together in a day or so.

Spend your time thinking what you want on your website rather than how to build it. Spend a couple of hundred quid getting the website looking professional.
    • get the images you want
    • create the text you want for each page.
    • decide what gadgets (formfill, gallery) you want.
    • have you a logo for the company
    • search phrases which prospective customers will type in to find you. (these need to be incorporated in the website)
As you can see, there's a bundle of stuff you can do - for your own website, that you are best qualified to do.

Get some techie guy to do the stuff like sorting out nameservers and hosting and the actual design. You're not going to be doing this on a regular basis, so you don't need to know.

One decent order from a professional looking website will generally pay for that small static website.
  • Thanks for the replies. Chunter you are right, I should get a professional to re-do the site for me. I will get this done in due course, I wanted to try and get a respectable website up and running for free as I do not see it as a great income provider inmy line of work.

What type of business is it? Will it benefit from having a domain name? You could take hosting with www.citycm.co.uk at £10:99 a year, install Wordpress then go from there.
