Flea and mite treatments for cats

My poor cats are suffering, I think it is this warm weather, normally they would be shivering with the cold and mostly indoors by this time in October.
Does anyone know of any pet companies that have flea and mite treatment s amples to try free? Also worming treatments, that is the next job.
Ginger cat is the worst, too disgusting to tell you what happened to him yesterday.
I got some treatments for the back of the neck from the vets yesterday and it cost £14
Everyone seems to recommend white vinegar for its antiseptic/disinfective properities, I was wondering wether I also ought to try this on the bits the cats cannot reach like their necks, which is where these things hang out
Has anyone any suggestions?

There are some useful threads on fleas in the Pets section of the MEGA Index sticky at the top of the Old Style forum.

Not OS I'm afraid but it is money saving...
You can buy flea, worm and tick treatments from online pet pharmacies. The type of product you can buy in a pet shop or supermarket are really not worth having, but you can get the same treatments that your vet prescribes from these online pharmacies at a fraction of the price. My cat needs tablets for various health reasons, from my vet they are £60, from vetuk £32. Some items you will need a prescription for but your vet can no longer charge you for issuing one.
https://www.vetuk.co.uk
https://www.bestpetpharmacy.co.uk
I have used both companies, they both offer free delivery (on all non food items) and both have really quick delivery, vetuk just edged bestpet on price for the tablets my cat needs.
Hope this helps.0 -
Excellent I have put both these companies in my favourites list. I just checked out the price of Drontal cat tablets for worms and they came in at £1.59 each on the first website, cheaper than the vets and less mither than having to drive there, park up, queue for ages etc.
The Advocate drop on solution the vet gave us yesterday for ginger cat worked very well but on these websites it says it is only available on prescription. This stuff is for multiple flea and parasite infections. (It also says it does some worms although I am not sure how this works as it goes on the back of the neck)

If you need to use the advocate again then just ask your vet for a prescription, he/she cannot charge for one. Then you just post it off and order as normal, my vet does me a repeat prescription for my cats tablets, vetuk hold it on file and I place a new order every month.0 -
Someone on the great feed and treat your pets for less thread over on the marriage/relationship/family forum, sorry cant remember its exact title my memory is hopeless. Well they use an online pharmacy (so do I but havent tried this one yet) and she placed an order but didnt checkout, left it a few hours and then got an e-mail asking her if she still wanted the order, and offering a discount, think it was 10%. I think it was the bestpetpharmacy, but will see if I can find it for you.

I find the flea collars the best economically. You can even get them now to cover a whole year. They are about £10 for a year's treatment, I think it's very good value, I will be getting those next time. My cats have the cheap 4 month ones on at the moment. I also use half a cheap one in the bottom of my hoover bag when I change it incase of hoovering any up.
The Spot On treatment was rubbish imo. I'd get FrontLine which I think are better if you don't fancy the collars. Cats do get used to them very quickly though.I've been lucky, I'll be lucky again. ~ Bette Davis0 -
I would recommend capstar tablets. you can get them from the mentioned online pharmacies without a prescription but there is a vet who sells them cheaper on ebay (around £8 for 6) they kill all fleas on the cat within 24 hours they are amazing but, you have to treat your house at the same time or they'll jump on from your carpet. you can give them to your cat every time you think they have fleas, even repeat daily if you want to.November £10 a day challenge. Im starting early- 66p so far!0

Hi
this may sound odd but we had problems with fleas for years and usually ended up spending £20 to £30 on sprays etc each time we had an outbreak...didn't like all the chemicals they used as sure they set of OH asthma. We have our cats injected at vet with ???plan, forget the name which costs £26 every six to eight months, sounds expensive but no fleas, no flea dirt and no nasty bites on legs which is the worst bit. I think its worth it in the long run. I just had them done and it was 10 months since last injection even though they recommend every six months and there were no fleas.0 -
Do you have pet insurance? Our m&s policy seems to say that they will pay for tick and worm treatment. Not tried it yet, but if you have ins. might be worth an investigate.0
