Attendance allowance after heart bypass....

Hiya...

Just some advise please, a bit stuck....

My 74 year old dad has been in hospital for a week, he had a cardiac arrest and needs a triple bypass soon. My question is, he has been feeling ill for months and never went to see the doctor. I'd like to try to claim AA for him, he already gets Income Support and Pension credit but I don't want to bother him if he won't qualify so does anyone have any advise please.

    Hello,

Go and see the local Welfare Rights or CAB.

My dad is 86, lives on his own and has had a few funny dizzy spells. Has blood pressure problems and takes medication for it. He generally feels light headed when he gets up out of a chair.
He has been checked out and has been told to lie down next time.

Anyhow, Welfare Rights completed a claim for him and he now gets the top rate of £71.40pw. Enough to pay his gardener/handyman and cleaning ladies.

    Good luck

feeling ill wont get him AA,if he has care needs (note mobility needs DONT count for AA), then suggest he applies
  • Hi there, we appplied for this for my father and also got the top rate. My sister called and asked for the forms, she filled them in for him and he just had to sign them. They phoned and asked some questions ie does he have to get up in the night, how long does it take for him to get dressed etc etc. It was really very easy and no hassle to him at all.

Lets hope that after his bypass he feels much better.
Enough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D

I think you can claim for it at the age of 65 if i remember rightly. Again if i'm right its on a slideing scale. What he will get depends on his health and needs. The good thing about this type of benifit is that its NOT means tested so it should'nt affect any future claims on any other benifit.
If i could i would, but i cannot so i wont, but maybe one day i will.
  • It is over 65 and paid at 2 rates either £47 a week or £71

We have found the Pensions Service advisors very helpful. Someone will come and visit your Dad, fill in any forms that are needed and make sure he is getting everything he is entitled to.
  • Thanks for all your advice :)

I looked up AA and it says to wait for 6 months before he can make a claim, seems a long time and I wonder if the fact he had been feeling unwell for a while/dizzy etc would count?

My mum gets AA because she has severe arthritis and my dad is named as her carer - we'd better change that.

I'll phone the benefits agency and see what they advise, my mum was worried about me doing this as she thought they might lose benefits due to my dad being in hospital.....

The six months is from the time he has had the problems, not from the time he makes a claim.

My parents both get AA and both claim Carer's Allowance for each other. They don't get the full amount but because their basic income is low they do get a bit extra each week.

Do try your local Welfare Advisors and get them to do a check on your Mum at the same time.
