Slate worktop??

Hubby dear is having a go at making me a freestanding kitchen (its a small room so might only take him a few years:rotfl:) Anyhoo, we have bought some elm for the worktop for the island unit and I thought it might look nice if we used different materials for the sink unit and the dresser unit. We have been offered some slate by a friend with contacts at a local mine. Is this a good material for near the sink or should we reserve it for a unit that wont get as much stick? Anyone have any experience of slate worktops? Cheers

As natural stone goes, slate is one of the softer materials.
It is often used for fireplaces in a honed finish and flooring in a split riven finish, however as a worktop it's not entirely practical.
Assuming your looking at a honed finish, you could permanently mark honed slate with your fingernail.0 -
As a tiler who has a lot of experience with slate and other natural stone I have to agree that slate is not a very suitable material for worktops as Alan M has stated.0

Thanks for that - I could have made an expensive mistake. Perhaps granite is the way to go then for a bit of contrast, although my kitchen is very small so a black one might not be suitable.I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent. :rotfl:0
