Hard drive full

Acer laptop with 140gb Hard Drive. But it is split in two, one called acer/c and one called data/d. C is now full but d still empty except for a few bits. Can I remove the 'wall' splitting the hard drive to make c bigger and d smaller? Tried moving files and programs from one to the other but computer keeps telling me it may affect the program.

Don't move programs or system files.

Move data files - things like pictures (.bmp, .jpg, etc), word docs (.doc), spreadsheets (.xls), music files (.mp3, .flac, etc) to the D: drive.

Then download WinDirStat and run it to see what's taking up all your disk space.

You can bring down the wall between the two drives, but it's best not to do this until you KNOW you have a good back up of everything on the C: drive.
  • You are wanting to re-size your partision. This can be done fairly simply.

If you are running windows 7/vista you can do it from windows itself. Right click on "my computer" and click on Manage. Click "disk management" and you will see your disks. Select "d" and right click and select shrink. Then you can do the same with "C" and Extend it into the space.

If you are on XP you will need a third party program. Google "Easeus Partition Master Home Edition", its free and ive used it in the past to do this without any issues.

Run the remove unnecessary files wizard from control panel

Delete all windows updates from the C:/Windows directory

Move your My Documents and Temp Internet/browser cache folders to the D: drive

Move your page file to the D: drive too

Remove any unwanted programs via add/remove don't just delete them

    Empty the recycle bin

    Then defrag the c: drive

Shrunk 15gb from D and it has set up another partition for this. But I cant expand C now. The 15gb partition is shown as Unallocated. How do I allocate it to C?

No offence intended to the OP, but if OP is struggling to move data between partitions, I don't think it's a good idea to be recommending resizing partitions, especially without reinforcing the necessity to backup.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Thanks for the worry but I'm well up on backup. Two external drives on my network. One on WD anywhere auto backup and the other stores all my High Definition camera files. I know a fair amount but always think it best to ask if not sure.

I made a E and F partitions with wasted space on the D drive and use that to store my music on 1 and photos on the other, meaning all the heavy data usage, also if windows dies without partitions failing as well then reinstallation is quicker and not need to worry about dragging out all my music and photo backups.

I do have a larger drive than OP, So maybe a good idea would be to start backing up your data that you use less like old photos or Old music.

vista expand/shrink isn't as good as it could be, assuming there is nothing on d, delete it, then expand c.

Storing data on a different partition and using disk imaging for backup is a good habit though.
