I still had my questions unanswered as to why this only came up now and not previously as that part of the kitchen was covered in a particularly nasty looking carpet when I moved in. And only been a problem last six months and to my knowledge not since the house was built in Victoria's reign! I was told the water tables could be different this year....

Wasn't the driest summer , but last winter was not the wettest, so unless large earth moving was done close to you would get some more advice.

Every builder and his dog will tell you what his solution is and sell you a job which they would like to do. But everyone is always short on justifying the causes of the problem. I really think you need to understand for yourself why this is happening and only then go out for quotes for a fix. With this kind of job the more mouthy and confident the builder is, the less you should trust his judgement as to the remedy. This is completely independent of any assessment of his competence to build and make.

Water only generally falls from somewhere, rises from somewhere, blows from somewhere or condenses. Once you understand the processes involved, you can either make a judgement or make some simple tests to prove or disprove theories. But overall, I'm with wallbash on this. Get a long sheet of polythene, the width of the door. Trap it in the top of the door and weight it down to the ground outside. See if the problem continues. Of course if the kitchen floor is on the same level as the ground outside. this may be the cause of you problem.

I think this will be relatively straight forward to solve, if you put a lot of thought into it. Builders will take your money and I think you will lose thousands and be no better off if you just take their word for it.
