Problems with petrol comsumption
Options
My car is a kia picanto 1.1 it is 2 and half years old. In the past two weeks my car has been drinking petrol. I used to get about 300 miles out of a tank but the other day used a quarter of a tank doing 23. im always an economical driver. never go above 3k revs. gentle breaking etc. and wasn't stuck in obscene traffic. i used to bring it to the Kia gargage but their work is not good and they are v v v expensive so am looking for a good local mechanic. i cannot for the life of me figure out what is going wrong. there is just me, my baby and few books in the car. no lights coming up on dashboard, tyres six months old air pressure ok tread ok. any suggestions or should i just take it to someone?

How have you measured the fuel consumption?0

Does it run the same/rough/lacking power?0

Check the tank or below the car for any fuel leaks as even with heating and all mod cons on there shouldnt be more than 3-4mpg difference0

You need to perform a brim and refill to guage how much fuel you are using, one tank using more than usual could be down to nothing more than a tank of dodgy fuel.
But I don't know that any small local garage would have access to diagnostics for such a small makers vehicle.0 -
That certainly doesn't sound right. Either try to find an independent Kia Specialist (or Hyundai - same company, very similar cars), but these are few and far between, or take it to a different dealership. A local independent garage may still be able to help though.
Sorry not much help.0 -

Fuel prices have risen again, So presume you put the same amount of money in not fuel.. ie you put £30 in
as apposed to 30 litres.
So you got less for your £30 amd the gauge dropped quickly.
Not doing less mpg though.
Also winter nights, You will be using your lights & heater more which will use slightly more fuel.
I also find that traffic moves slower in the winter. Your average speed will drop and fuel consumption
increases.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Fuel consumption increases significantly in cold weather.0

That is true... but even in the Autumn a Kia Picanto should still get more than 92 miles from a tank full.0 -

One swallow doesn't make a summer.
The OP has not had 93 miles from a tank, they THINK they've had 23 miles from a quarter tank which is a bit different.
Could be a lot of reasons, the most likely being that they did not completely fill their tank at the last petrol stop. That could be due to the petrol foaming up, or the garage forecourt being on a slope etc, which would give the impression of a full tank.0
