I recall a good while ago that Which reviewed tumble driers and the one that had the lowest energy rating, think it was A rating was absolutely useless as it took an absolute age to dry your laundry, so not worth having. Can't remember what brand it was but if you check out your local Library and their reference section you should be able to access the tests for them.
I'm pretty sure that this is the one that they reviewed...

You'd be better spinning your clothes dry on as high a speed as possible to get as much water out as you can, and then line dry as much as you can and just use a tumble drier to finish off. You get sensor dry tumble driers which reduce heat as they dry, or set to low heat etc. A 'C' rating for a tumble drier is quite a decent rating, a lot are D and F!!
With your tumble drier be sure to keep the coils at the back clear, you can do this by unscrewing the back cover off and just hoovering all the fluff etc out of it to keep it from overheating. If you want to keep track of it's energy consumption invest in one of these too...

I got one and it's great for keeping tabs on how much electricity certain items are using. Just try and go for A rated appliances as much as possible, but not in the case of the TD, C is good though.“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. John Lewis JLTDC01 Tumble dryer is listed a "A" rated in the WHICH magazineWarrior0

I have a White Knight A rated dryer, if used in A mode then it does take time to dry the clothes thus I put them in overnight. Not an expert on dryers thoughMy Shop Is Your Shop0

This web page has quite useful information on it about energy rated tumble dryers.
We did a lot of research and shopping round when we were looking for a new one and plumped for the AEG T59800 (which is mentioned in Which's article). It wasn't cheap (about £500!) but we wanted an A Rated machine as we tumble dry a lot.
Aside from finding somewhere who actually stocked it (OH wanted to get a look at it before we parted with that much cash) and AEG being rubbish at validating the free 5 year guarantee they offer with it (have finally managed to get it but not without a lot of donkeywork and telephone calls on our part!), we're very pleased with the performance and efficiency of it. It's also got a time delay feature on it, so we can set it to come on in the dead of night when economy 7 kicks in!0 -
we looked at 8 rated dryers but the ones we saw (last year) was quite expensive and took 8hrs to dry clothes. when we looked at the kw/hr it seemed to work out the same amt of energy used as a c rated condenser dryer (if i remember rightly) so we went for the cheaper c rated dryer0
