Switching DD's

Options
Hello

I signed up to Santander last week, i got an email from British Gas confirming details (didn't have sort code ar acc number, so i had to call the bank) The email said that the first payment will be 1 November, TOMORROW!!! And i haven't been able to put any funds into my account.

What will happen?

  • As long as payment doesn't bounce, If you can get to a bank tomorrow you should be able to put funds in cash to cover it and you may not get charged for the overdraft even. Also call British Gas to explain the situation if it does bounce, get them to retry in a couple of days (when I changed to A&L I had issues and most companies didn't even blink at this explanation).

I do recommend having enough money in both accounts when switching but many people don't have the resources for that (I delayed ISA payments for my switch just to make sure).
Santander are awful - mission in life is to warn people since 17-Sep-10, 18-Sep-10 realised one of thousands.

You mean you went over to Santander willingly, of your own choice :eek::eek:

They are the most incompetent load of !!!!!! I have ever had the misfortune to bank with..

I had current account and ISA but boy oh boy did they make a messs of both of them in the 6 months I was with them.

Got out as soon as i could.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Check the Direct Debit guarantee offered by British Gas. I suspect that they haven't given you the required notice, in which case ask Santander to invoke the direct debit guarantee until the necessary date. Note though, you will still be required to make this payment at some stage.

The combination of British Gas and Santander makes me shudder, two of the worst customer service organisations in the UK.

Santander has messed up my switch - I've had 3 failed direct debits so far, mostly because they cancelled the original ones before the new one had been set up. Also, they never sent me the promised list of direct debits for my to agree to until AFTER they had started switching them. When I phoned them to complain and to inform them of a charge on one of my cc accounts due to their mess up, they were very laissez faire and weren't very interested in honouring their promise to refund the charge.

I'm realising that Santander aren't a proper bank. Yes I want the 100 pounds and the good interest rate, and of course I'm pleased that they haven't noticed or cared that my wife has switched from the same joint bank account as me into a separate Santander account etc etc but they seem to be a bunch of idiots! Switching wasn't easy...it took ages and they muddled alot of the direct debits. But hey, we're getting 200 quid.....
But today, I went to pay two credit card bills in the branch. Yes well of course this is normally done online, but I'm still waiting for the online details to arrive. And I fancied a stroll. Massive queue in branch. Surprised to see the cashier giving out the old Elgar twenty pound notes to the old lady in front of me. She'll have fun trying to pay with them.....Then annoyed, when I remembered same cashier wouldn't take an old fiver I'd tried to pay in on my first visit to the branch (yes I got it in a French jumble sale for 3 Euros and not from down the sofa like I told her but she didn't need to know.) Then told by cashier that 'you can't pay bills here!' I'm sorry- I thought this was a bank!!! So, had to withdraw 1400 odd quid in cash - although I refused more Elgar 20 pound notes (not legal tender anymore!!!). Cashier undercounted by 20 pounds- but luckily I saw. Headed across the road to Lloyds. Job done there in 2 minutes. Moral of the story- yes the rates and the incentives are good, but I think I'll be changing after a year, back to Nationwide. And joining Metro Bank to get the card for free withdrawals overseas- ironically why I joined Nationwide in the first place!
