Cant remove mcafee antivirus security

Hi, I bought my pc second hand about 6 months ago. Last week my macafee antivirus has been sending messages that the subscription has ran out. I want to remove this and install free software, but firstly I cant figure out how to remove mcafee, (the uninstall option is not in the start menu and I don't know where to look) secondly I don't know which free software I should use for the antivirus and firewall. Please Help:beer:

  • Hi
To remove McFee, go to Start, Control Panel, Add & Remove, scroll down the list until you find McFee and remove it.
    For free antivirus, try AVG
    http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-free

For firewall, do a google for free firewall, or try Zonealarm or Agnitum Outpost Firewall or Kerio, they are all free,
You only need one, so take your pick.

    Hope this helps

    Macafee should be under

    1)Start
    2)Control Panel
    3)Add/Remove programs

    it should be listed there

for a free replacement antivirus I suggest AVG

    http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-free

    for a firewall Kerio

If you still have prblams, perhaps try this from McAfee Support:

I've been having exaclty the same problem as Nolski with McAfee. I tried downloading a removal tool from their website but was unsuccessful and I've tried f1charlie's link but am still getting the reminder from McAfee to renew my subscription (it only pops up upon start up).

Please help me as i think this is the cause for my pc being so slow at startup

Have you used msconfig to look at your startup list, or try this program which goes into a bit more depth:

    http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html

And try disabling anything which looks to be related to McAfee (or anything else which you don't need any more to help with your slow startup).

I am having trouble completing removal of McAfee Security Center - message pops up saying certain elements of the unistall are not present.

I would use the removal tool you mention, but that says it does not work with Windows 98SE.

Do you have any other suggestions, as it is preventing me from installing Panda Security software.

    Many thanks.

    Kind regards
