For the second job, could you not move nearer and reduce your travel costs? You wouldn't have to do this straight away, just when you could afford it, say 4-6 months down the line. Or when actually working there you might be able to find somewhere to kip during the week cheaply (colleague rent out couch/spare room etc), and to only travel mon and fri??

From very recent experience once you sign off you get your p45 and remaining JSA within a week (3 working days for money). You won't get housing benefit run on. I am having to fight for CT run on even though I fulfil all the criteria. Sorry, no advice on getting tax rebate but good luck with your job, whichever one you are offered/take up.

As you are starting a job within the new tax year you are unlikely to get a tax rebate. They will simply adjust your tax liability for the rest of the year.
That's what I thought but I've been told that if you start a new job you get a refund of it, rather than adjustment of tax liability and this is paid in JSA. That's clear in their literature, probably an incentive for getting into work or something.

I can't afford to relocate which is a pain, but would do that when I could. It's the travel to the job which is the first hurdle. :(

Claiming a tax refund when you stop work

Yes, that kind of supports their literature:
If you stop claiming Jobseeker's Allowance before the end of the tax year, the Benefit Office will pay any refund you're entitled to after you've stopped claiming.
  • Just remembered something which might be useful to you. I don't know how you'd go about confirming this, maybe someone here might know.

When you come off JSA you may get some tax rebate. One of my colleagues at my new job :D worked for a few months earlier this tax year, before signing on and got some rebate in cheque form (I think, but don't quote me, but definately she spoke of receiving tax rebate money now, as it was helping her pay the rent until wages got sorted out at new job) with her p45 once she signed off a couple of weeks ago.

Yup that's what I'm asking for advice on. I was made redundant in May, have been unemployed for 6 months so should in theory get back my £909 in income tax I've paid which will allow me to travel to a new job (even the £512 one).

I also want to know if, in addition to this, they'll give me back my £639.25 they owe me from tax in 2008/09. I've sat on this for a while.
  • I've no idea about the previous year's rebate - could you give them a ring and ask? When I claimed a few years ago I had to write to them with the details and I was sent a cheque for a previous year's tax rebate, but I can't remember the time scale - when did you ask for it?
As for this year's tax rebate, well I do know my colleague wasn't expecting it (nice surprise) so it must have been generated automatically with her p45 so you wouldn't have to apply for it, just sign off.

Yup it says in the book they issue you a "tax refund" when you stop JSA and it's probably paid with your final payment.

I've not applied for 08/09 yet just curious if they'll do both at once. If not will just have to send off for it as I did in 07/08 which was paid 3 months later (sent it in August, was paid in October which was a surprise!).

I'm going to the CAB and speak to the job centre Monday, just wondered if anyone had experiences of my problems and could give me some related advice. :)

Have you spoken to your local tax office about your refund for the previous year? The first tax refund I recieved I had to claim through the tax office, the second I recieved automatically but this came two years after the end of that financial year.
