Selling CDs and DVDs

Hi All,

Looking for some advice.

I am looking to sell most of my CD and DVD collection and was wondering what would be the best way to do his.

I know ebay is usually the first choice for many, but unfortunately I do not have the time to list each item as this is too time consuming and I am pushed for time.

I have looked at music magpie, but generally, have found they offer me just 40p per dvd and its a shame as they are in immaculate condition with some still in the cellophane.

I am conscious that Game no longer accept DVDs, so any tips and advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

:-)

It's a bit of a trade-off, I'm afraid. There's no place that will offer you retail prices for everything you've got in one box. Either you sell individually and get a lot more money, or you sell to a dealer and get 40p per title.

The problem is people looking to buy in bulk are always going to offer you a lower price than selling individually would get. Dealers are looking for joblots at a wholesale price, whereas when selling through a site such as Amazon or eBay you are selling direct to the people buying for their own entertainment and therefore prices are much higher. The advantage to selling in bulk is it's a one-stop shop. Although the price will be low, they will take anything off you - whereas selling less sought-after titles individually isn't going to be very rewarding. I still have a copy of "My Dad's The Prime Minister" which I've tried to sell on eBay for years with no success, not even after the enforced free postage rule managed to take most of my other lemons off me the first week it was live. I was really sceptical at first whether it would work but buyers seemed to really love it.

If you have the time and patience to do individual listings the return is going to be greater. As a buyer I know that normally if I want to browse, I do an eBay search. If I know what I want, Amazon are easier to look at. With that in mind, look at Amazon or Play, where listings are not as tedious to upload and all you need to do is have an item which is in their catalogue rather than spend time manually creating a listing. They also have fixed terms for buyers to see, so you don't have to do a lot of the thinking about that aspect of selling as you would do on eBay. It's expensive in terms of fees, but worth it as there are millions of buyers browsing the site so someone is bound to take something off your hands sooner or later, particularly in the run-up to Christmas.

Check out Amazon for the better price ones. Anything worthwhile is going to be a bit time consuming, be it Amazon or Ebay, if you want to sell in one go, you are likely to get less than half you would selling seperately.

  • Ive never sold on amazon or play. Is it as reliable as ebay. I know of ebays flaws, but am use to using paypal.... do amazon and play guarantee payments, etc.

Which from your experience do you think would get the best prices? Most of my titles are mainstream

Try looking up prices on both Amazon and Play to get a good judge of that. I've paid £3 for a cheesy film before but things like Star Trek and big drama and comedy series hold their value quite well. Over the last year or so I've recently bought s/h Star Trek Deep Space Nine for £10-15 a go (complete series), secondhand The West Wing for £7, complete Monty Python (new) for £17, the BBC Sense and Sensibility (new but used copies go for similar) for £5, BBC Pride and Prejudice was roughly the same if not a bit cheaper, Being Human series 1 (can't remember whether it was new or used) for £8.50, and so on. There's no "one size fits all", it's very much dependent on what you've got. If you can significantly undercut some of the current prices on popular items, your items should sell quickly (perhaps to me...!!!). I virtually never buy a new DVD these days, there is always something going for a song on Amazon, so I don't know who else is buying but certainly there must be some trade.

Meanwhile I struggle to sell things like My Dad's The Prime Minister (I'd be lucky to be able to pay someone to take that off my hands) and I've still got a couple of Harry Potter films (the older ones) sitting around. The only thing I've got left to sell now is a duplicate copy of Drop the Dead Donkey, and that was sitting on eBay for a month unsold at £4.99 inclusive postage, though if I could open an Amazon account it may have sold quicker.

Amazon and Play are stricter about some things than eBay (particularly postage and returns - Amazon expect all sellers to abide by the Distance Selling Regulations, which mean everyone has to offer change of mind returns) and IIRC Play at least makes payments through their proprietary system every so often (not directly when something sells). Browse through their information pages to be absolutely sure how and when they pay you. Play make you quote a price inclusive of delivery. Amazon give you a small credit towards postage. I believe both need a credit card to open an account (which I don't have so I can't sell on either place).

    Plenty of sites to try:

    https://www.cex.co.uk
    https://www.musicmagpie.co.uk
    https://www.mineminemine.co.uk
    https://www.filmvault.co.uk

And, of course, Amazon, eBay and Play. There may be more, but the additional ones coming to mind specialise in games rather than DVDs.

I should also add that I agree with Crowqueen on the purchasing of used discs - I also can't remember the last time I bought I DVD/CD/Game new. I just can't justify the extra cost when a CD can often be obtained for less than £3 used. Why pay £8 just to have the same disc, new? Unless for a gift, I just can't justify it.
