Dealers HPI Tradeweb info vs private HPI check

Options
We are about to buy two used cars from a local non franchise dealer. He has told us that both cars are HPI checked and clear. We picked up one of the cars today and he gave us a print out with some icons and text at the top of the page which appear to show that all is well with the car.

But, is this the same as having a private HPI check? I'd had one done by the RAC earlier this year, which seems much more comprehensive.

Is anyone in the know about these things?

Thanks

  • It will be the same info, its just less is displayed as we dealers know what were looking for and dont need pages and pages telling us.
  • Excellent, and a shockingly quick reply! Thank you for that peace of mind. He seems really up front and genuine, but I just wanted to check :-)
  • The HPi checks we do on HPi TradeWeb are only half a page long with all the info on there, but none of the blurb that private people insist on reading.
  • It will be the same information - the dealer can give you a copy of the trade certificate as part of the sale. However, you won't get the protection of the HPI Guarantee (up to £30K) or any investigative support for any questions or queries about the check. If the check comes back clear, you're fine (provided the dealer has checked your V5 details, VIN and mileage on your behalf). If you have any doubts though, £20 for peace of mind may be worth it, as you're covered by the HPI Guarantee if any problems arise with the vehicle data. You'll know what data has been checked as well. hpicheck.com will tell you more.

  • Interestingly I bought a used car in August from a well known gargage and as part of the sale they did a hpi check.

Anyway a few days a go I had a phone call about an accident my car had been in (never had one in this car or any other car) and so I called the garage and asked why this might have happened, they hpi'd again and said it was clear, and said they were at a loss as to why this had happened.

So my dad decided to do his own hpi through the AA and it came up with a mileage discrepancy; it was record by the dvla at 19000 miles in July and sold to me in August with 2000 miles on the clock.

I got in touch with the actual hpi people and the national milage register and they confirmed, after me sending all my documents off to them via fax, that it was a clerical error that 'happens quite a lot' and the mileage at the time of sale was correct.

Obviously now the issue is resolved but I am glad we did our own check because even though the garage told me the car was clean, we found our own discrepancy and so would any future buyer if I were to sell the car. Id advise you do your own, just for peace of mind.
  • The duff mileage is normally supplied by !!!!!! like KwikFit who just write anything down, which usually spacks the system up.
  • are kwik-fit reporting mileage when a car is in for new tyres/service?
  • Yup, they always log them on. Annoying really as half the time they input anything or if its somrthing with a service indicatior that counts down from say 15,000 they stuff that mileage in.
