Working with a disabled partner.

Hi. My OH receives lower rate DLA and income support and as a couple we get housing and council tax benefit. Since we moved in together about 5 years ago I have been his carer (although I am not entitled to carer's allowance) and I haven't worked.
Hopefully I will be able to return to work one day. Part time at first, but if all goes well I hope to get a full time job eventually.

I've looked on the usual websites, but I can't find anything that tells me what my OH will lose if I am working. Will his DLA and income support be cut in line with what I earn? I can't find anything that tells me whether we'll still get some housing or council tax benefit either.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

DLA is not means tested and as far as I know, never gets counted in any benefit entitlement calculations.

Put your details into the Turn2us online benefit calculator to model how your new income affects things like LHA, CT, IS.

Investigate the criteria for working tax credits which depend on factors like hours worked, age and household income.

I work F/T and my partner gets DLA and Incapacity Benefit (I think) neither of these have altered at all

the CAB were brilliant at helping him to fill in the forms and send of his claim, you could always ask them...
Go hopefully into each new day, enjoy something from every day no matter how small, you never know when it will be your last

Thanks for the advice. I've tried the benefits calculator, but it doesn't seem to include income support or housing/council tax benefit. I'm probably doing it wrong though!

I could make an appointment with the CAB, but won't they mind spending time helping me if I'm not actually applying for any jobs?

    Thanks again for the help!

I don't understand why it isn't covering the impact on IS and LHA and CT since it routinely calculates these elements when I've run through various scenarios. It definately contains boxes to enter what the CT bill, the rent charged and the LHA allowance.
  • The CAB shouldn't mind, that's what they are there for.... They have a special calculator that tells you how your income affects your benefit entitlement. :) It's really good...........

What benefits calculator are you using? Try https://www.entitledto.com which definitely does cover these. Or go to CAB, they won't care if you're applying for work or not.
