I've suggested cutting them off before. She can be a wriggly girl (scissors+ wriggly cat = someone's blood appearing lol) and some of the tatts go in several directions so trying to cut them would be a nightmare. Vet didnt like the suggestion either (have mentioned it previously)
where there's a will there's a way....
clippers?
Best to get rid & start afresh - ie trim low so there is no matts & then check & groom cat regularly to prevent them recurring. Trimming claws will obviously make the job easier to complete. You do need to show pets `who is boss' by being firm & continuing despite their protestations...0 -
There is showing "who is boss" and there is understanding when an animal is uncomfortable with what you are doing and knowing when it is best to leave be and respect that animal's feelings.
Rev - are you still reading this thread ? Thank you so much about the B+M with feline fayre pouches. Picked up 6 today, cost £1-18. 60% meat, 1% oils and fats. Old girl loved it and ate hers before fatty boy finished. He actually took his time with his, he loved it though and left some (must have felt full ?) and then finished it a bit later on.0 -
to contemplate ideas offered.
There will be sores developing under those matts - I had an old cat that I left with my parents when I finally moved out & I discovered this upon returning some months later & removed them one by one (not all in one sitting obviously). She wasn't keen on grooming & parents were nervous of her temper.....
Good luck0 -
Vets actually know very little about feline nutrition, if you go to your Dr with a nutrition and diet question they're likely to refer to another professional who has studied the subject aren't they? Same for vets and animals.
Try asking a vet NURSE then - Many of my colleagues have undertaken long and challenging courses in nutrition. I am an oddity amongst my colleagues - I have no interest in nutrition, and if asked a question outside the knowledge I learnt as part of qualifying, will refer to a nurse with better knowledge - especially where disease condition nutrition is concerned.
Most practices do free nurse clinics - ring them and ask for a consult with the nurse most experienced in nutrition.I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

I'd also suggest that if you have cat with matts, to ask either the groomers or vets to clip them out - should be cheap enough if done without sedation.
I have seen it suggested in vet journals, that matts can be just as painful to a cat as osteo-athritis can be - vets/vet nurses can clip matts out of all but the most agressive animals without sedation.I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Thanks for this. I have learned alot about pet nutrition from this site, vets and the internet & common sense - reading the ingredients on food packaging etc.0 -
Boiling fowl (skinny old chickens hanging from hooks in the butchers) guts - older ex-rescue cat loved them - talk about money saving: delicious meal of soup (yes it took longer to cook than `ordinary' chicken but the taste was worth the wait/effort) & very happy Tomcat - I gave him the innards which were liver, kidneys, heart & what looked like eggs in the making, plus the `parsons nose'.0

MY 4 kitties have Orijen dry mixed with just a bit of of Purina/Go Cat/Whiskas into the Orijen.
That is in their dishes all the time, I do not "feed them" on time as such, dry food and water are always available.
They also get fresh raw chicken wings, raw mince turkey/beef/pork and... ham/tuna etc etc
I have 4 very bouncy happy kitties at home - yeterday they tried to nick the pig's trotter that Zara was munching on... was very funny to watch them as the trotter was nearly a size of a kitty0
