Hello,

I'm completing a D2 form for a provisional C1 licence to drive buses and lorries.

In section 3 there is a question, "Do you need to wear glasses or corrective lenses to meet the legal eyesight standard for lorry or bus vehicles?"

I can't seem to find information on what is considered "legal eyesight standard" in this case. The supporting leaflet INF2D only states that there are extra eyesight standards for those who drive medium/large vehicles but does not clarify any further!

Can anyone help explain what is the legal eyesight standard?

Thank you :)

  • Do you need to wear glasses to drive ?
If so then the answer is Yes, you do need to use glasses or corrective lenses.
If you don't the the answer is No.

    From the DVLA.
The distance requirement for the eyesight test is:
    • 20 metres for vehicles displaying the new-style number plate
    • 20.5 metres for vehicles displaying old-style number plates

Eye test on my driving exam was read a number plate at 67 feet. Driving test they use a carpark 2 doors away.
On my HGV they had a row of plates on a portacabin.

I was told if you couldnt read it from the usual spot they would use a tape measure to prove to you and them
where 67 feet was. Cannot read it you fail.

Doesnt it state on your licence whether you need glasses these days?

I have a friend who spent his redundancy money getting a HGV license and then could not get a job as he did not have 2 years experience.

    thanks for the responses!

I think I'm a little confused because on the form, under questions about eyesight, there are 3 questions:

    1. Can you read a car number plate from 20.5 metres?
    2. Do you need to wear glasses or corrective lenses when driving?
    3. Do you need to wear glasses or corrective lenses to meet the legal eyesight standard for lorry or bus vehicles?

I just wondered what the extra requirement is for question 3? Is it being able to read further than 20.5 metres/67 feet? If that's all it is about the legal standard (the distance!)

    Thanks again.

Unless it's a code, I don't think it explicitly states " needs glasses ", can't see it on my licence anyway

  • HGV eyesight requirements are rightly far higher than for a standard car licence.

A fairly basic home test can be done by downloading the relevent clickable link on the Medical Questions section at the top of this page.

Don't worry about answering it wrong. You will need to go to the doctors for a medical anyway and there's an eyesight test so if you're blind you'll fail it.

Excellent, thank you, that's what I was after

"The DVLA standard for lorries and buses (which is also
the standard required for driving taxis) is that you must
be able to read the number 12 line with your worst eye
and the number 9 line with your best eye."

    thanks for all responses.
