Brake problems?

Options
Hi. I had my front brake pads and discs changed a couple of months ago but I don't know if this is connected. When I drive my car in the mornings, the first time I use the brakes, it only happens once, there is a crunching noise which I can feel through the brake pedal, the noise seems to be coming from the front right of the car. This only seems to happen if it has been quite cold overnight. I am looking for advice before I contact the mechanic that did the work as he is a family friend and I don't want to offend him if it's not something he has done wrong. Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Sounds like the drivers side brake calliper is sticking.

    Hi, Rossy
Would that explain why it only does it once? Would it be expensive to fix? Thanks for your help.

Does the car have ABS? If you can feel it through the brake pedal it sounds like it could be the ABS cutting in. Is it under heavy braking, or just when you brake normally? Does it always happen?
  • It could also just be rust on the disc being rubbed off the disc. They can start going rusty just from washing the car so could easily get condensation on them during the night. One dab of the brakes would clear it like you describe.

HI, Thanks for the replies. My car does have ABS and when I drove it just now the ABS light came on and the tyre pressure light. I inflated the tyres and both lights went off. It happens when I am driving really slowly, 5mph, as it's when I am driving out of my close onto the main road. The discs are only a couple of months old, so would they rust that easily? Now I getting a bit worried about the ABS light and what that means? Sorry I'm not very good at technical stuff!

Hi minimad, Apologies i had a busy day yesterday

I highly doubt it will be rust - Agreed if it rains or you wash it you'll get a very fine golden layer on the disc but not enough to cause an issue.

You say you had the discs and pads changed recently. What car is it?

ABS is a "helpline" for drivers in the fact that when you slam on the anchors, the brakes "Should not" lock up and cause you to skid. It happens by rapid movement of the pads to the disc - like pumping the brakes really fast.

You could have a damaged ABS ring on the wheel hub, but if it was damaged the light would be on constantly - Get it to a garage and get them to diagnostic check the vehicle - Any faults will show up.

If you can you could always clean your caliper too. The piston could be covered in dirt/grime causing it to stick

Hi Rossy, Thanks for your reply. My car is a 2003 Mini One. I'll have to give the garage a ring tomorrow and get it looked at. Thanks for all your help.
