Recommended Laptop Retailers - Needed Today!

Hi All

Whilst I realise that I would get a much better deal if I were to buy online, I really need to purchase a laptop today, and was wondering if you fine people would be able to advise me which retailers offer better value for money than others!

Also please can you advise what laptops I should be considering - I am looking to spend about £500 (give or take a bit!) and I want something that isn't going to be slow. Main uses are: browsing internet (multiple browsers open) downloading games for DS and watching the football. From reading other threads, I think that I am looking for a minimum of 3GB RAM and at least 320gb. But I am clueless about which brands are good (and which to avoid) and have no idea regarding processors!

Personally I'd buy a SONY, although it might be slightly expensive.

I'm no expert but have been looking into buying one too.

Get a dual core processor - either intel or AMT
The new intels (3i and similar) are expensive, so you'd prob be OK with an intel pentium.

Go for more RAM (3GB +) but don't worry so much about the HDD (memory): 320 is good but 250 OK - you can always add an external HDD later or memory stick etc.

Avoid cheaper makes: Acer etc.

PC World, Curries, Comet etc: not much between them. Staff and support have poor reputation but they have offers a lot of the time and you can walk out with it in your hands.

John Lewis will price match, and offer a 2 year guarantee as standard.

If you're looking for Office software on the machine, Office 2010 costrs around £85 extra (£65 if bought with the laptop from some places), but PB, HP, Dell and a few others now sometimes come with 'Office Starter'. This is Word and Excel only, in slightly cut-down versions. If you're happy with that it can save you the £65.

No they won't,

just recieved an e-mail from them stating they won't price match a

Toshiba laptop that is £20 cheaper at Argos because Argos only offer a

12 month guarantee and charge £5.95 delivery.

Even though I wouldn't have had it delivered when they have it in stock!
