I must go to primark and look at the pirated ready for bed, thanks for that, my sons birthday party he is going to is pirates, I have the 25p eye patch from woolies, some old elasticated waist black bottoms, was going to put a white t-shirt with it, a bandana..0

A few ideas:
1. you can get a black eye patch at the chemists for about £1.20
2. make a vest/ sleeveless jacket: cut a piece of fabric, say 60 cm by 120 cm. Fold it in two. Make a hole for the head, cut the front in two to make two 'sides' of the vest. Sew the the sides, but not right to the end, so that they become holes / sleeves.
3. Get a small head scaf or neck scaf - I usually use a piece of red cotton.
4. Beard and mustach face-painted.
I hope No 2 is clear enough. If not, let me know when do you need it by, and I could send you a picture. I made a similar vest for Pinocchio costume recently.
Oh, and of couse a stripy top!0 -

I havent got the time or money to buy an expensive outfit for a 'one off' occasion but dont want him to look too sad up against 'professional' costumes. I wasnt having a dig at anyone i was just making the point most of the kids will be wearing brought costumes so i needed help with ideas so he didnt look to shabby in comparision.
Thank you everyone that has come up with some really helpful ideas. ive got some red fleece From an old dressing gown im going to make him a waistcoat with that and some black and white stripy cotton id forgotten id got will make great trousers-i can draw round a pair of his joggers for a pattern
I've been up town this morning and got some fabric with skeleton pirates on (its black with silver skellys on and only cost 2pound a metre that should be enough to make a long sleeved blousey/shirt. i also picked up a couple of big brass curtain rings to sew on a bandana as fake earrings.
Just a trip to a supermarket for a cheap cutlass and he should look ok.
Thanks again everyone for your ideas and suggestions
claudie and clairehi, i did not mean any offence to working mums im sorry i should have not worded it the way i did. i'll consider my wrists slapped and not make comments that could be considered judgemental again ok.SPC~12 ot 124

The trouble with the bought costumes imo is that every kid that wears one will look like every other kid who wears one0

Oh thriftlady that is so true...but for those of us with 10 left thumbs, sometimes there is no other option. I find it funny that one person tries to compete with bought outfits while I try to compete with home made...the grass is always greener.

A stripey top is quite good if you've got any left over from the summer.....:DEx board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0

Mrs Moneypenny I've found a pattern that might suit and a skull bandana, so if you want them pm me your address and I'l put them in the post. I am sure you can find some fabric to suit - cut up something old or scour the charity shops for something you can utilise.
Best wishes.Do not allow the risk of failure to stop you trying!0 -
completely off the point here but might give you a laugh, I had to send my son in costume to his first Nativity last year, he was 2 1/2. So, as he's a boy, I thought "shepherd". I (although I am a girl) was a shepherd in a nativity once and my Mum made me my costume from old blue curtains with a tea towel over my head.
So I made ds's out of an old blue tablecloth - used sewing machine and everything - with a tea towel over his head. Except he refused to keep the tea towel on with anything resembling a tying thing so we wedged it on with a baseball cap lol
all the other boys were in cream and taupe outfits, with crooks and stuff, some HM some not, but my son stood out a mile (sore thumb?) in his bright blue outfit. And he cried all the way through it. Bless. But this was because he was scared out of his wits up in front of loads of people. Not cos of my sewing ability. I think.Jan GC: £202.65/£450 (as of 4-1-12)

That is cute Jill - thankfully my DS's school keep all their teatowels and linen bits and use them for Christmas so we didn't have to worry. The teacher kitted out all the shepherds from the drssing up box - and now I know a good place to donate all my old sandals and tea toweslThe smallest deed is greater than the grandest intention ~ Anonymous0
