The firm I do work for has decided to change to this Cisco "any connect" client vers. VPN now which is all well and good but it now effectively blocks off Skype and every other route to the internet which makes it inconvenient to say the least, by the way, i am well aware of why they made it this way...... :j

Now has anyone had any experience of how to tweak this thing in order for it to do both - the previous VPN was intranet & internet compatible

Any clues or ideas?

  • Split tunneling is the feature of you need enabled, routes traffic based on the destination IP address through the VPN tunnel or direct to the Internet as required.

This feature is configured on the VPN Access controller at your work, AFAIK, there's no way to override this on the client.

You could run it within a VMware virtual machine on your PC.
I am working for a company with its VPN and one client who has a different VPN - I am able to use both VPNs simultaneously.

That's what I like. Somebody willing to put their job on the line because they want to use Skype/surf the net during work time when the employer has taken steps to prevent it.

I agree. As far as the statement goes. However, there are numerous occasions during a day when as part of our work we need to have access to the net. We also use Skype extensively to maintain contact with staff and some clients - its far better (and cheaper) for conference calls in our experience. What I'm saying is Skype-in' n' surfin' ain't necessarily unrelated to work.

Having then to use Cisco VPN to be able to deal with one of our client's work can make life particularly difficult especially when their server has all the speed of a dead slug - which is most of the time.
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

It is if the O/P's company put in a new variable that deliberately disables the staff to use Skype / Wastebook / other work time loss programs. If the aptly named ' !!!!!!_Turpin99 ' thought it was a good use of his company's paid for time, he would ask the nice HOD in the ' tech ' department and not post here for circumnavigation tips.

I'm not clued up on split tunnelling, but he is going to have to be able to write a set of router tables and get them on the DD-WRT enabled BIOS, and pay for a VPN [ the free ones can hardly load a page let alone up / down video ]

  • Thanks Doverswot & Prowla......I think you may be right about it being controlled at the 'other end' just wondered if there was a simple setting I might have overlooked

Precisely! which is why I wasn't looking for a lecture on the "rights and wrongs"

I think Richie-from the-Boro has summed up that point. If you have a legitimate reason to access the net, why aren't you asking your IT department to configure it that way on business grounds rather than asking on an open forum how to circumvent the restrictions.

The 'rights & wrong' are irrelevant. Your company has decided that you will not have internet access and that is the end of it unless you put up a good business case.
