Electric oven bought from currys online

Hi everybody
i purchased a hotpoint built in electric oven from currys online. It arrived today. The installers removed my old cooker and wired up my new one.
After them being here for 10 mins i was asked to come into the kitchen for a quick demonstration. After showing me the basic functions he then asked why had i bought an in built cooker when in actual fact i should have bought a built under cooker instead?
I confirmed that i thought i was buying the correct oven but obviously not! He said not to worry about it and that i should try it for a few days to see if i might change my mind. He even stated that i would be ok to use the cooker even if i decided to change my mind and ask to change it.
After he left i had a good luck at it and it was clear i had purchased the wrong oven as when the main door opens it touches the floor!
I telephoned currys straight away and the lady i spoke to said there would be no problem about an exchange and even took details of the correct oven. I asked the question about using the oven and she said that was fine. She finished off the call by saying head office would ring me to sort everything out.
By 5pm nobody had rang so i telephoned head office myself. They had it on record that i had rang earlier. I explained everything that had happened and he said he would need to speak to his manager.
He rang me back shortly afterwards saying that as the cooker had been wired up no refund or exchange would be offered. I explained that i didnt know i had bought the wrong oven and if the installer knew it was wrong then why did he still install it? He said that was company policy that if it was wired then that is their stance.
Basically i have a £550 cooker that doesnt fit properly sat in my kitchen that cant be used properly.
Any help with this matter would be much appreciated!

There are two types of oven, built-in and built-under, both of which will fit under a kitchen worktop, the built-in would require a cabinet though. I take it you wanted it fitting under a worktop, in which case a built-in is perfectly fine as long as you have a suitable cabinet to fit it into (you can pick one up from wickes for around £40). Also, what sort of wiring have they supposed to have done, I would have thought the oven would be connected via a standard 13amp plug socket. Where/how exactly is the oven fitted at the moment and what sort of cooker did they remove?0

Electric oven will be wired to a master switch. 30A fused supply i think. Not a standard 13A plug.
Gas hobs & ovens have a 13A plug for the spark circuit and clock/timer.
Is there a gap at the top of the housing above the oven? Does the door open more than 90 degrees?
I cannot see how the handle touches the floor. The housing should have a plinth under it which is a few
inches off the floor.
If there is a gap then you can raise the oven. Fitting it under the counter is safe.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Thanks for the replies. The new cooker currently sits on the floor and thats why the handle touches it. Its probably 20mm too big to fit under my worktop. Ive looked into the hotpoint built under cookers and these come with adjustable legs and would fit under my worktop.0

Thanks for the replies. Just had a phone call from currys admitting that the cooker shouldnt have been wired before the installer had checked to see if the unit would fit. They have agreed to exchange the unit for an under worktop cooker.
Ill makesure that when they bring the new one that they check it fits first before wiring it!!0 -
Any chance you could answer my question please?0

Its a double oven. A built in oven should either be sat in housing or on timber runners which would enable the timber floor pelmet to run underneath it. The one they brought has no option but to sit on the floor and would require the worktop to be lifted up by 10-20mm to accommodate it properly. As it stands at the minute if the main oven door is opened then the handle comes to rest on the floor which obviously its not meant to do.
The new oven has adjustable legs and my kitchen timber pelmet will be able to run through as its meant to.
