Moving into flat with prepayment meters......
I'm (hopefully) moving into a flat with prepayment gas and electricity meters soon - I know they suck but I won't be there long enough for it to be worth having them removed.
What do I do ? Do I need to contact the supplier and tell them who I am etc or does it just keep working with the cards the previous tenant was using?
Thanks :T

You need to contact the supplier, the previous tenant could give a final reading and all the money you pay afterwards could go to them if you don't update the suppliers information. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Ah okay, thanks

Do I need to contact the old/current supplier or can I go with anyone?
I'm ashamed to say I work in connection with the electricity industry, don't know a thing about retail :rotfl:0 -
Current supplier first. Give them the reading when you moved in. But you are not tied to them. It may be to much hassle on a short let to change though. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

You need a new card as well or you will be paying as the old tenant.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0

Actually - if I need to wait for a new card, does that mean I'm stuck using the emergency reserve on the meter and once it's gone it's gone until I have my own cards?0

With some suppliers i.e. BG you contact them and you can get the cards from the local outlet. Only problem with gas is you have to get the card, put it in the meter and then go back to the outlet to purchase credit. This is so the card and gas meter are 'paired'.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Please ensure you do exactly this, the amount of people who do not register the card in the meter before trying to top-up is unbelieveable.
also if you dont know who the supplier is call national grids m-number hotline - 0870 608 152
and please make sure you take your starting read, and any debt on the meter.Working within the gas and electric industry since 2008'0 -

What do I do ?
Make sure you negotiate a good discount on the rent on account of the huge utility bills you'll be paying over the winter
