Liability for failure to collect direct debits

Hi, I was paying my previous car insurance by direct debit, I then change my car and the insurance company failed to collect the last three payments.
The company has written to me saying that I now owe them for the shortfall. I asked why they hadn't collected the dd, and was given the answer that the dd had been cancelled, but I have checked my bank account and the dd is still active.
Basically before going back to the insurance company I would like to know if I am liable for a debt that has been created by the insurance company failing to collect the payments.
Thanks

Of course you are, you still owe it because you havent paid it............make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Just because a direct debit mandate shows as active doesn't guarantee all the details are set up correctly both with your bank and the company trying to collect the money.
And yes, you owe the money because you haven't paid it.Indecision is the key to flexibility0 -
It's your responsibility to check that your bills are actually being paid, even with a direct debit in place. You owe the money, you have to pay it.0

And make sure the policy doesn't get cancelled or next time you go past any ANPR you could get pulled and lose the car0
