I have in the past notified tax credits of a decrease in our income part way through a tax year and had an immediate increase in tax credits for the remainder of the year. I had to do it because I was on maternity leave and my wages went right down after a few weeks. I have done this on 3 different occasions. You must be aware that as soon as the income increases again then you must notify them. This is because you will have given them an estimate of his earnings. if he claims esa then this will be counted as income for tax credit. I find that if you want any advice from tax credits, it is useful to phone several different times to check if you get the same answer (if you can get through to them on the phone). I am very surprised that they wont adjust it part way through unless this is something new they are doing.

You should claim housing benefit immediately and write on the form that you are waiting for decisions from other benefits. They will suspend the claim until you provide evidence but at least it will eventually get backdated.
