help! wrong gas meter readings

hi, ive looked about and cant find anything that helps, the story go's a little something like this

we've been living in our flat now for 14 months and the gas meter was pointed out to us on moving in (very quickly, gas meter, point, electric meter, point)

anyway the weather has washed the numbers off the meter lids so i had to trace the gas pipe back to the meter, on doing this i have discovered that the wrong meter was pointed out to us and that we've been giving the wrong meter readings to scottish power for the whole 14 months.

I've contacted scottish power and they got me to do a "burn test" to see if anything happens with the meters, ours didnt move so i gave them the serial number off the right meter, they have said an enigineer will come round to double check and they can take things from there.

This is all very well but what im really concerend about is whether we'll be due a massive great bill in time for xmas, ive got the 2 meter readings in front of me but i cant make head nor tail of them, fortunately we're £100+ in credit with them, but any help to put our minds at ease would be appreciated

What are the reads you are stuck with? And what are reads on your bills?

When this happens, they will be wanting to re-estimate your opening readings so that they can get the meter readings corrected now.

Suppliers have an obligation to ensure their agents are up to date with meter numbers. In the case of gas, the Supplier is also directly responsible for passing the meter on after the engineers who maintain the meters pass the details to them.

If you have been paying, that will still stand against any bills. However, the question is whether you have been paying enough. Remember, you could also have overpayed.

Need mroe detail about the readings you are worried about to say more.

The engineer coming out will get the meter details updated and passed onto your Supplier, however you are right you be concerned about the readings as it's unclear until they take these actions, what they will do with your bill.

Post some more detail. There is also a SP rep on this board who will be able to help you.

    Hi martin_algar

This should be easily sorted for you and from the meter readings you have posted, it looks like your meter has been recording half of what you have been paying for (provided both meters started on a zero reading). Once we have identified your correct gas meter, we will be able to check our system for previous accurate meter readings. These previous readings will be used to check how accurate your start meter reading was. If it looks like the start reading was incorrect and we amend this, then we cannot increase your charges going back more than 1-year. I very much doubt that we will be increasing your charges based on the readings you have updated.

We will keep you updated with the amendments on your account once the gas engineer has confirmed your correct meter.

Let me know if you have any further questions in the meantime and I will be happy to help.

    Kind Regards
