He's been at work 2 months.. so he's definately had at least 1 pay slip.. regarding Tax, we're paye so he's taxed like anybody else..

And regarding jobs, believe me, up in the North East they are very few and far between.
While he is 'taxed like everyone else', he has not yet been paid like everyone else, so he is riding on the back of unused tax allowances accumulated from April.

I suggest you read up on how PAYE works and see how you are taxed if you have not worked for the first months of the year. This might avoid you making wrong assumptions and then getting upset over them.

  • Unfortunately OP, life in the IT world is like that. As a permie you'd better get used to it. You will probably end up working in an office with 10 other people, all of whom will do the same role but earn vastly different sums of money. You have to be a bit mercenary about things, look after yourself and don't worry about anyone else's salary; I secured a 30% rise last month by getting an offer from another firm and asking my current company if they were prepared to match it.

If you have been asked to train the guy, train him how to do the job wrong, that way he messes-up, you fix the problem, he looks like a useless idiot, and you get a payraise.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

Of course, since the whole of this is based on speculation and gossip (both of which are notoriously reliable :) - I think not!) - then we are not in any informed position. As someone has pointe dout, as a recent graduate he may be on a much lower tax code for now (due to having got half way through the year with no income at all - which is not the OP'd situation). Or maybe someone misheard what he said - because that sort of thing never happens.

to be honest its not ur business how much he earns. unless u've seen his contract uve no idea why he earns what he does.
  • The OP should probably direct his colleague to these forums so we can help him cut down on that £770 a month train bill!!

This is what I hate about british companies. How on earth can it be right for two people to do the same job and for one person to get paid more than the other? How is that fair?

The sooner all salaries have to be made transparent by law the better in my opinion. This stupid secrecy is also another way of keeping womens salaries lower than mens.

    The whole thing stinks.

Horrific advice, if you tell him the wrong way it only comes back on you!
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!
