New employee earning more than me
Comments
-
Hi all,
We have a new hire at work (a private sector IT company).
He's a graduate, having just finished a computing degree (the same as me, but at a different uni).
Basically, I've found out he's earning £4,000 more than me.
Having been on the same wage for the last 3 years (21k), and been consistently told there is no money for any pay rises, I feel lied to and betrayed.
I'm now expected to do my job, and train this new hire.. hardly seems fair to me!
btw, i'm a guy so can't go down the Equal Pay route..
Cheers in advance
Do you have a question?0 -
Can I just be clear on something.. it's not just that he's earning more than me.. if he was earning the same as me i'd still be peeved..
4 1/2 years of experience clearly counts for nothing.0 -
No actually.. more a point of do people think this is right?
Do I have any rights to find out if this is fact? i.e. If I were a woman I would have the right to ask my employer.. but as a man?
So that is two questions.
Depends what you mean by right? It may not seem fair to you but it is not uncommon.
You have no right to know what someone else is paid. (Unless you think you are being paid a lesser salary because of some discriminatory factor)
You have equal rights as an employee - makes no difference if you are male or female.0 -
Yes it is 'right' - and fair too. It is up to individuals to sell themselves at an interview to ensure the company offers as much as possible to attract the best people. It has nothing to do with what others in the company are earning - perhaps they see something in him they don't see in you (hypothetically of course!).
Concentrate on your career and stop worrying about other people; show them that you are worth more and demonstrate your achievements at your next appraisal.Life is too short to drink bad wine!0 -
Could he have negotiated a better deal than you because of his travelling costs?
In any case, there is no obligation for two people to be paid the same rate for doing the same job.
Perhaps he is just a better negotiator?Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

Employers have to pay the market rates normally to get new staff. It is likely they have paid what they needed too to get him. With existing staff over time wages can drop below this level.
The only way to get it increased is negotiate with them and you have no right to demand the increase. It may be looking elsewhere/resigning works but this could be a dangerous game.0 -
He didn't strictly tell me his salary. But he said his travel costs "Almost half his wage each month".. he then told another employee that his train tickets were "£770 a month".. doesn't take a genius to work out that means his net monthly income must be £1600 and therefore £25k a year.. Looking for a new job isn't an option in the current climate, there are so few about.. I'm just not very happy that my employer can take the !!!! like this.
Was he talking about his net salary or gross?
He may be on less than £19000 a year.
Time to stop speculating0 -
Well as he's a graduate he took the first job he was offered. so that is his problem that he pays so much for travel. But as soon as he moves closer then that discrepancy will be gone.
Even if he travelled from Birmingham to Newcastle, the fare would only br £743 a month!
Who travels that far to work?

I think its called life, if your not happy then go elsewhere... simple as if he did a better job a selling himself then all credit to the lad.The futures bright the future is Ginger0
