Tax Refund

Options
I sent a letter to HMRC (South Wales tax office) regarding a tax refund I believe I am due approx 6-7 weeks ago.

I have not heard anything since and I am considering giving them a phone to see what is going on and how long it should take.

I have been told by one friend that it should only take 6 weeks while another said they waited about 12 weeks.

I know it varies for different tax offices but I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience of this and how long it took for them to get a refund.

I really don't want to phone and wait in a queue for ages if it is possible that they are still getting round to it.

I'm not really desperate for the money but it would be nice to get it in time for christmas and the main concern is that they have not received the letter.

Ant help at all would be appreciated.

6-7 weeks is plenty of time, so I'd say give them a polite quick phone call to see where they've got to with it. Probably avoid phoning at 9am when everyone gets into work and tries!

At least then you know if they're dealing with it, or whether they haven't got a clue what you're on about. They should be able to give you a rough timescale for it to be processed if you ask nicely.:)
Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard

The turnaround at the moment is approx 12 weeks and they will be able to give an approximate date to be dealt with (so long as you can tell when you posted it)

Just had one (from the same area). Applied 19/7 ..... cheque received 13/10.

Give it a few more weeks - pointless ringing them as they won't look for it in the pile.

  • thanks guys.

    help is much appreciated.
  • Need some more advice on this please guys.

I still hadn't received anything from HMRC so I gave them a call on 19th November. When I called I was told that a cheque had been sent out on 4th October (wish I had phoned them sooner when I heard that). As I hadn't received the cheque they said they would cancel this and I had to send in a letter explaining that I had not received the cheque and asking for a replacement so I sent this the next day (20/11). They advised me to call back if I hadn't heard within four weeks.

Tomorrow will be four weeks and I have not received either the original cheque or the replacement or anything from them at all. I plan to call them tomorrow and chase this up however I know that this looks suspicious from hmrc's point of view. two cheques sent and going missing in the post is a bit unlikely. If they check they will be able to see that neither of the cheques have been cashed.

I am assuming that it will be up to them to check that the cheques have not been cashed and basically issue replacements until I get it. Would I be right in thinking this or will it fall to me to prove that I did not get these.

Initially I was happy to wait for the money but by my calculations they are owe me around £900 and due to the time of year I could really be doing with this but I don't really know I will be able to prove I didn't get the cheques if they ask me to with the exception of printing off bank statements.

Yes. They issue 'payable orders' which are printed in-house and paid out of accounts maintained in-house. So they can fairly quickly tell what has happened .......... and which account(s) a cheque has been encashed to.

But - I would ring them again in the circumstances.

  • brilliant. that was my main concern cos I know that I haven't received anything.

Will give them a call tomorrow and see what they are saying.

    Thanks
