Car payment by Paypal?

I am advertising a car on gumtree at the moment, and a prospective buyer wants to pay be paypal.

Its not the usual scam like badly worded email, and hes proposing paying by paypal then picking the car up personally. It may well be that he just hasnt the cash available and wants to pay by card indirectly.

Now i know theres a good possibility its a scam, and no doubt that will transpire from subsequent emails, BUT if its not, under what conditions would you accept a paypal payment for an amount of £1500 - its not via ebay.

I would not accept it at all, wouldn't even consider it for a milisecond.

You still have the paypal on collection scam possibility.

No, you have no tracking so i think i am right in saying that they can claim money back if dishonest.
Just a thought, maybe ask to see driving licence as last car i sold on ebay i discovered went to a couple of con merchants giving fake names and address' and re selling. I didn't like it as , probably would be ok, but i would then be the last owner and he was re selling on ebay on another account and completely missing out all the serious things that i had listed that were wrong with the car!

It could be a stolen credit card, it will take paypal a couple of days to realise this, in the mean time your account will look as though the money is in there.

No, paying for cars is usually better done in cash in person. Even eBay don't insist on Paypal being offered when dealing with motors.

He may not be a scammer so don't insinuate that he is one when you decline and ask for cash. Just politely ask him to pay you cash when he meets you or arrange a safe way to pay £1500 if he doesn't want to carry that much cash around with him (which could be the reason he wants to pay electronically).

My sister and her husband sold a van this summer and they were discussing the pros and cons of various payments; to safeguard the money and check for fraud I think they arranged to sort it out at a bank.

Goto the local branch of their bank and get the money or chq or transfer directly to your bank account.

They dont have to carry money, Neither do you and it is a good way for them to check the car works
going to and from the bank.

No risk of getting dodgy notes, Chargebacks, Robbed, etc.

You are being set up to give the car away via a fraudulent chargeback or a bent card. Don't do it!

Tell them cash or nothing.

Paypal cannot be trusted with a transaction of this size. Apart from the 4+% they will charge you, they will most likely freeze your account for months on end the moment the transaction hits it. This is what they do.

One way or another, you are unlikely to ever see the money.
