Thanks Kilty, good link will try that as well.
The monitor has it's own power supply plugged into the same surge protector as the computer.0 -
I've read the thread a couple of times but I can't tell if you've tried a different socket in your house. If not, you really should do. Leave the surge protector out for now.
Use an extension lead first if you don't want to move your PC but test the extension lead before you start.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0 -
Hi, Kilty My son is at home and said I don not have a seperate power supply for the monitor, so that would explain why it is dead.
He has looked over the new power supply unit and no other switches visable.
Have tried the computer in other main sockets and tried other items in the surge proctor, these work fine.
I'm now assuming that my new PSU doesnt make a noise on start up if other bits are wrong with the computer, but I have yet to try Kiltys link.
Wish I had backed up!!!!!0 -

I wouldn't worry too much. It doesn't sound like a Hard drive problem, and so your data is likely to be sitting there safely. Even if a Hard drive had died, it's possible to retrieve any important data you may wish to.
Where are you based? I know that when a computer dies it can be somewhat stressful.
If you're near me, I'd be happy to have a look, and I'm sure there are others who'd do the same.

Hi just to say a big THANKYOU to everyone for their help, support and advice.
I tested the comp via kiltys link, and found that my new PSU didnt work, back to the shop for a replacement and after much pushing and poking my computer woke up. And yes I was pleased to find everything working ok no information lost etc.
If it wasn;t for this site I could have ended up chucking it out and getting a new!! however for £25 for the newPSU its as good as new.
Thanks again folks0
