Internet will not connect?

I have a problem with my connection to the internet.

I can access the internet through my netgear router through my pc. When the screensaver comes on I cannot get back on the internet when I try sometimes it will but more often than not won't. I have to re boot my system and everything is fine again until the screensaver comes on? I have no problem at all with my laptop that uses the same wireless router, that is hardwired into my PC. Is there some setting in windows that is causing the problem?

Thanks for any help

I don't know why your screensaver would cause such a problem but you can disable it by right clicking on your desktop, clich the screensaver tab and select 'none'. You can also click on the 'Power' button and set it so that your monitor powers down.

The only thing I can think of is power saving, do you still have an ip address after it sleeps?

    start run cmd

    ipconfig /all

    does ping 192.168.0.1 work?

is this a wireless card or wired?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

The pc is wired, when I look at all the settings on the router they all say connecetd and my laptop will work on the internet (wireless) as well but the computer does not seem to want to use the internet?

Try the settings in control panel and then power options. set the turn off monitor, turn off hard disk and system standby to never to see if this cures the problem.

I have also known firewalls to get confused when the system goes to sleep, so you could try shutting down the firewall and then restarting it when this happens, to see if that is the cause.

On Windows, some network cards are put into standby when a screen saver engages or hibernation starts. This breaks the connection, a bit like yanking the card out. If you were then to put the card back in it wouldn't work and would require a reboot.

I would suggest changing the power settings to stay always on and no screensaver. Modern screens are not as susceptible to burning as older ones which needed screensavers.

Have a look at the properties for the card and see if the box labelled "enable Windows to turn off hardware if not in use" has been checked. Or it may have a Power Save option. Turn it off.
