  • I have avast on one and avira the other (N140s) , sadly only installed this week to replace Norton 360 so I can't compare truly yet but both work very well at the moment. Obviously it pays to have Malwarebytes ready and HijackThis too but hopefully they should not need be used except for occasional scans by Malwarebytes. It may be an idea also to run an initial Hijack and save the log somewhere other the default location for future use to see what has changed from the base install.

Avira or Avast will be fine, make sure windows firewall is ON and set to automatically install critical security updates.

Make sure you are using an up to date browser too.

if you want to keep it fast and efficient don;t keep installing/uninstalling junk and programs you don't need, toolbars, email attachments etc etc.

you might find it makes life easier to go grab all the basic Adobe plug ins early on too

    -Adobe reader
    -Adobe Shockwave player
    -Adobe Flash

...and perhaps a freeware .pdf printer/writer

I used to use Avast but recently changed to Microsoft Security Essentials - Both are free but i've found MSE to be less resource hungry and it works a treat

    You can get MSE here

    or Avast here

Same as above, either Avira or Avast as your av scanner and Malwarebytes for malware, Windows firewall.

Make sure you have the latest updates for Windows and don't forget to check updates for Adobe & Java, stopped using Adobe Reader myself and went with Foxit.

I had Zonealarm and Avast, then found two nasties had crept through. Now I'm using Comodo which has a built in firewall and antivirus as it came highly recommended. All are free.
