  • Is the answer not what you can afford? My 15 yr old brother got a motorbike for x-mas last year (he lives in France) from my Mum and Grandparents but they can afford it.
Don't spend more than you can afford..... I spent £100 each on my 2 younger brothers this year and £350 on my OH but it hasn't skinted me and I like spending money on seeing people happy
  • this is a v interesting thread! I think it all depends on what you can afford and what you're used to - i always knew gifts came from the family - i was told that family buy stuff and send it to santa and he delivers it - which i never questioned. I remember a particularly skint christmas when i was four when i had dozens of parcels to open - crayons, felt tips, colouring books etc. I don't remember feeling cheated at what they were. These days i usually get a dvd or similar from my parents to open plus some diy done in my house for me - last year i bought laminate flooring and dad laid it for me. It meant we got to spend a day together, it didn't cost them any money but was worth probably £100 to me!
It's an awkward emotive subject that raises it's head in our house despite the fact that we have no kids! OHs mum really goes for it at christmas - last year was our first christmas together and she spent £200 on us. Each. We have a system where I buy for my family and he buys for his family, so imagine my horror when she unwrapped some smellies from boots! So on a tangent from the original post, how much do you spend on a relative who saves up all year to go totally mental buying you christmas presents!?!?!?!?!

I expect if you and OH have been together a while then sh'll be aware of the differences between your families, so I wouldn't worry too much. I would aim to get something personal and thoughtful that is around the same budget that you spend on your own parents :)
