Want to move from BT but we owe money and where do we move?

We hate BT and want to move. Firstly they say we are on a contract (that we knew nothing about) for the phone line but not the broadband.

so they are going to charge us a cancellation fee.

Then we owe them money since they failed to collect both our direct debits (broadband and phone line) when they merged the accounts (without any notice or information, confusing the hell out of us when we received the bills)

But who do we move to, talk talk is the cheapest for us, but what are they like as a company?

Plus I know that you can keep a bt email address by pyaing something like £1.50pm for it, but mine is under the main account, its a sub account, is this possible with a sub account address?

  • Don't know about the email. However this forum seems to have a fair share of people moving between BT and Talk Talk and vice versa having hopes for service which, frankly, when you look at the threads on here, isn't warranted ;)

Cheap and good service don't work together with phones and broadband.

O2 seem to be developing a fair reputation for customer service. IDNET is quite well regarded.

I cant find a lot said about plus net, what do people generally think about them?

If we owe BT money, will they demand this in one go once we leave or can we pay this monthly?
  • Plusnet are owned by BT. They appear more competent in the broadband department, but bargain pricing = bargain basement support as is usual.

You'll have to pay it in one go.

They'll send you a final bill which you have to pay in one go. If you have Sky TV, maybe consider moving to them, their plans are cheap and I've never had any complaints about their support department, at least they seem to speak English, unlike some of the people I've had to face at BT. On a note, the BT line cancellation fee has just been reduced to GBP2.50 for each remaining contracted month, while it used to be GBP7.50.

Wanting to move from BT too, but OFCOM wasn't so kind as to make them lower the cancellation fees for broadband too, so stuck until April :(
