Going on-line with new pc

Hi, I am getting a new pc next week. I want to wire it to my Sky router. Can I just wire it up and go or do I need to install the Sky disc again?

I intend to use the old pc as well, and they will both share the monitor although not used at the same time. Can I connect both to the same router? There does seem to be 4 sockets in the back of the router.

  • Yes, just connect the PC to the router using an Ethernet cable. Your router will assign an IP address via DHCP; this will be a different address to the one being used by your current PC.

you NEVER need a 'disk' to get online with a router, thats just junk your ISP will send you to fill up your PC with branding/marketing/junk
  • You can connect both pc's to the monitor at the same time, as long as the monitor two video inputs.

or, you can buy a switching box to plug both pc's into, with a single output to the monitor. Just switch to whichever pc you want to use at the time. Some posh ones extend this to mouse and keyboard as well, so one monitor/keyboard/mouse for two pc's. :)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • Thank you all. I will be installing antivirus etc before going on line. Monitor has dvi and hdmi sockets so no problem there.:j

I really like the idea of a switching box, particularly for keyboard and mouse. Any recommendations?
