Thinking of Buying seat Leon on 0% VAt but where the other 2.8%???
Options
Hey,
I am trying to work out what I can manage to haggle for a new Leon Sport 1.4tsi list price is £17060 with vat to be taken off on their offer page http://www.seat.co.uk/generator/su/com/specialoffers/site/NewCars/newLeon/noVAT/main.html it states the price will then be £14546 now to me this is only 14.7% I pretty sure VAT is 17.5% unless it different for cars and I am oblivious of this fact????????
I always thought 17060 + 0.825 = £14074.5
Do you lot think I have a case to be made on this when I start to haggle??
I am planning on paying the thing off via part exchange and one of payment without any higher purchase....but I refuse to be conned by 2.8% when the advert says no vat.
Now I ain't ever haggled for a new car what can I exactly get from them is it sensible to try for:
12 month road tax
Full tank
anything off of options (thinking of getting convenience pack extra £225)
Also considering the FR which is £19750 but has 0% and could pay up to the price of the Sport on it but I have got prices on the net for anything down to £18400 with 0% do you think they will match.
Last question I see delivery has to be by 31st December does that mean even if I order it and state I must get it before that time and they agree and then I don't get it I will be hit with the extra cost?
Thanks for all the help.

Your maths is at fault!
Do the maths the other way around and it all makes sense.
The actual price of the car is £14546.
Then add 17.5% of the 14546 (14546 x 1.175) = £17091
Which is much closer to the notional list price you mention.
To illustrate the maths further
something costs £100
if the price rises 10% (£10) it would cost £110
something costs £110
if the price is reduced 10% (£11) it would cost £99Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0 -
I make the number 0.851, not 0.825, their figure is about right.
£14546 + vat = £170910 -
(£17060 ÷ 117.5%) x 100 = £14519.15
The actual figure is £14519.1489 and several more decimal places. To check back you can multiply that by 1.175 and you will get the plus VAT figure... which is £17060.00
Edit: They are overcharging you by £26.85. Ask why.
We were looking at buying an FR at the end of last last month. The salesman was really pushing us to order before the end of the month. Seeing as days later they were giving nearly 15% off, I'm glad we didn't.

The on the road price is £17060 but this includes the 1st year RFL (Car tax) £125 and 1st reg fee of £55 both of which you don't pay VAT on.
The 1.4 TSI is a very nice engine (just got one in a Skoda Octavia) economical yet just enough fun when needed.0 -
Cheers everyone didn't think of it that way....presumed I could take the 17060 price and remove the 17.5% from it since it includes the vat on it in the first place...
but ow well....Do you think I can know a bit more off that price with some haggling or am I wasting my time?0 -
£14,317 on Carfile, £15,181 on Drive The DealThe man without a signature.0

When haggling ask if they have a model in stock ready to sell or one someone hasn't completed on. You won't choose color etc. but should get a good deal. Make sure it is a FULL tank of fuel, not £25 worth or similar. Then, at very last moment say "it does come with a set of mats doesn't it?" Remember when negotiating after requesting something stay silent and wait for them to make an offer.0

>presumed I could take the 17060 price and remove the 17.5% from it since it includes the vat on it in the first place
You can, but you have got the way you remove the 17.5% from it wrong.
Adding 17.5% is the same as multiplying by 117.5 and dividing by 100.
To subtract the 17.5% from the total, you need to swap the divide and multiply round - so you divide by 117.5 and multiply by 100.0 -
