My turkey goes on low in oven when we go bed on xmas eve.Its usually cooked shortly after we rise xmas day :-)
  • Best christmas dinner I have had since becoming a mum, was 7 years ago I think, Just me DH, and kids, we had a buffett, laid it all out on dining table and just sat there picking, drinking, chatting really casual, really good quality family time ( I really hate that experssion). Bought loads of picky foods we all like, some really decadant puddings as well. All I really had to do was open the packets, and turn on the oven. Going away for Christmas this year, to a country club in Lincoln, so will do something along those lines.

  • IF you cook on Xmas day its a grand idea to do a late late lunch maybe about 6 then no one needs 'tea', and you get to stay in bed late and enjoy your xmas 'pressie' - IF your very lucky and then you get to share the fun of santa opening up the pressies with all the relatives and kids etc. Then best tip I've ever had is to remember to cook turkey upsidedown, its so much more moist and full of flavour, and buy pre-cooked roasties, they are so much better and easier - by the time 6 oclock comes around no one will notice they arnt home made anyway!! All the veg can be chopped etc on xmas eve, don't sweat the small stuff, its ONLY a roast dinner after all xxxx good luck and happy crimble!

I think doing a roast dinner is really easy and never feel the need to cut any corners. Whats complicated about putting the turkey in the oven and steaming a few veg
We had a goose and a turkey last year as well as a vegetarian dish (nut roast I think).

We always cook the turkey on christmas eve - just something my parents always did and I've followed suit....that way it's cooked, carved and stored in the fridge out of the way. All veggies are peeled and chopped and ready in the fridge too. I wrap my sausages in bacon before freezing them in the tray I'm going to cook them in (saves so much time) and they can be cooked from frozen. I never stuff my turkey, but make stuffing balls, they again can be made (normally the week before) and frozen, just wrap them in foil when reheating in the oven to stop them drying out.

The last thing I want to do on christmas day is spend hours in the kitchen, I want to be playing with the kids, we don't have a starter, we don't generally have a pudding (none of us are pudding people) and if we have guests they either have it our way or go without :D My mum knows to bring her own chirstmas pud if she wants one, there's always ice cream in the freezer and I can knock up a custard if required but the main aim is to just enjoy the day.

Obviously everyone does Christmas their own way - I've just learnt to avoid the bits that stress me most, i.e. the meat not being ready, forgetting something like the stuffing or sausages or veg and most of all.....I've stopped worrying about what anyone else thinks ;)

    same here :T

fab tips about the stuffing and pigs in blankets
  • We have Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve at around 4pm , I prepare all veg the night before and cook a turkey crown (far quicker, less waste and can save weekly at butcher)
That way Christmas day can be spent with the three kids playing games and going out to visit , the last three Christmas days have been completely stress free !!
