overpayment of income support

hi , i am new here and in need of advice,
yesterday i received a letter saying that i had been overpayed incomesupport in 1995 and would have to pay back £20 pounds a week, i have received another letter the same today saying that i need to repay £38 pounds a week, that is £58 pounds a week out of my esa which is only £90 a week. i have no knowledge of any overpayment and when i called them all they would say is that its an overpayment, they could not tell me why or exactly when, is there a limit on how much they can recover. thanks in advance

Have you considered contacting your local CAB office and getting them on the case? You need more information about why and how much was overpaid during that period. You may even have a case to make an appeal against their decision.
  • i have a appointment with my local trading standards money help people on the 11 nov, i have requested that they send me a detailed explanation of what the overpayment is and why it happened if it happened at all, they have said that it will take upto 28 days for them to get the file and to send me it, we will see, does anybody know wether there is a cap on what they can deduct becuase i think they are way beyond being acceptable about the amount they are trying to deduct
  • If you are receiving benefits then theres not alot that can stop them recovering past over-payments,the way to go is to negotiate AFFORDABLE weekly repayments.
