Housing Benefit or Local Housing Allowance entitlement?

Hello,

I am 22 and currently on a salary of around £15,500. I live alone (as my partner recently left) in a 3 bed semi-detached and now pay the £595 in rent a month myself (+ council tax, bills, etc).

With these circumstances and my salary does anyone know if i would be entitled to any housing benefit or LHA? or any other help for that matter?! Things are becoming a struggle :(

Any help appreciated.

I doubt very much, whether you will be entitled to anything, but here is a tool, http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/DoItOnlineByCategory/DG_172666
that you put all your information into, ie rent how much wages etc, and that should tell you if you can claim anything.

The worrying part is, you are only 22, the old rules state that a person under the age of 25 will only recieve benefits for a shared house, or a bedsitter, this has now been altered to 35 years of age.

You have 3 bedrooms, housing benefits will not pay the full rent for the house, as you are only entitled to receive the rent for a shared house or bedsitter.

Your wages work out at £250-£225 take home pay, they will take this into consideration, but as you dont have any children they may say that this is more than enough money for a single person.

If you do want to stay in the house, it may become easier if you get a lodger, even two lodgers.

I noticed on your other thread that you are at the end of your tenancy, would it be an idea to look for somewhere more affordable?

The other alternative is to see of your LL would be prepared to add someone else to your tenancy agreement and you could get someone in to house share.

Worth mentioning that if you could afford the property when you moved in and haven't been on LHA in the past 52 weeks, the council
Would calculate your entitlement based on your full rent for the first 13 weeks
I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.
