"Wiping the memory" on a Mazda radio

Options
Hi all,

I have a Mazda 323 and after changing the battery it asked for a code for the radio...I put in what I thought was the number but obviously wasn't, and now it just says 'ERR'.
I've phoned the main dealer and they say that the memory of the radio needs wiping to sort this out. They want £30+VAT for the privilege. Does anyone know if I can do this myself?

I am assuming that it is not the same as on the 'unlocking the car radio' thread, because the garage said that it wouldn't have come with a code (it's a Mazda only console) and a previous owner must have put it in.

Thanks in advance! (I'm going on a long drive tomorrow and I'd quite like music :) )

Kate x

    From another site.. http://www.mazdaforum.com
    Hi people,
Im going to hopefuly help alot of people out, but at the same time will upset Mazda dealers.

I have the code to unlock Mazda radios the have 'ERR' due to 3 wrong codes. Do not listen to mazda book that states 3 wrong codes make CD playing Inop req replacement...

    Milennia,323 BJ10*2, 626 GF10S2, Tribute.
Step one:- press one at a time- preset 6, AM, Auto M, Seek ^ (up).
    Step Two:-Input this number, 4989.
Step Three:- Press and hold Auto M and Preset 6 together.
Step Four:- The Word 'GOOD' will appear on the screen indicated that the radio will work.
Step Five:- Reprogram new Antitheft code into radio as per instrution manual.
Hope this helps some people out, save you some money as so
Make sense of that as you will, I don't have a Mazda to look at so I don't know.

If it does work, leave feedback so that other Mazda owners can use this and save money.

  • LOL....sorry, I didn't realise you were waiting desperately for me to come back!

Sadly it didn't work...it clears the 'ERR' message and lets me put a number in, but I think I must be dense: how do I put in 4989? Because I only have preset buttons 1-6 and I can't see anywhere else to put in a number.

I have googled myself (didn't realise there were so many mazda forums out there) and found a few other code options but none of them work either. I think I might have to give in and take it to the garage :(

Press button number one four times,
then press button number two nine times,
then press button number three eight times,
then press button number four nine times.

    HTH.

Which if it works explains why the code you put in before didn't work ;)
  • Yay! I told you I was being dense, thank you SO MUCH wealdroam for telling me how to do it.

4989 didn't work, but 1414 (also suggested on the thread that strider found) did. Which is BRILLIANT because I have a 2-hour drive tomorrow and really didn't want to do it in silence.

    Thanks guys!
