Thanks, everyone! Plenty of food for thought there... somewhere between £25-£35 seems about right overall. Oldernotwiser, I've sent him a couple of sound cookbooks, made sure he has appropriate utensils & storage, and passed on a couple of useful web addresses to him. He's eaten around here often enough to have guessed that there is more to catering than £3.99 pizzas every night... He's also within spitting distance of a giant Asda as well as a fresh fish market & living on campus so only needing transport money occasionally. But I'd forgotten to allow for the mobile phone... that's included in my own kids' budgets, but he may well be trapped into a contract of some sort. (One of my friends discovered her son had been conned into paying over £60 a month on a phone contract complete with virtually-useless insurance, just to get the latest gadget, which needless to say, was already out 6 months of date.)

Now, how to convince the lovely ladies that putting him in a position where he has to learn to manage his resources is actually better for him in the long term...?

Good luck is all I'll say... :p
  • £30 is definitely adequate. Especially if he gets into the habit of preparing a batch of food, say chilli/lasagne etc that will last for a few meals.

Where I live in London there is only Sainsbury's and Waitrose, but they have their own 'basics' ranges now, so you can stil shop on a budget.
  • Just try to search out bargain stuffs and buy value items like tesco value, morrison value, all kinds of supermarket value stuffs. 10p for the instant noodles. Of course I'm not encourage you to eat instant noodles everyday, u can eat while u r hurry to class as lunch or breakfast.
