I found time to pop into my local branch of A&L where I had a dormant current account. I spoke with the cashier, handing over my debit card asking for the £2.72 to be paid and my account closed.
Fancy my surprise when he said actually I owed them £52.72. For what I asked, he replied that I had not paid in a minimum of £1000 into the account and therefore I had to pay charges.
I refused asking for a simple closure because I had believed that the account was effectively dormant, he checked again and said on top of the £52.72 another £100 was owed - £5 for each day the account was overdrawn upto a maximum of £100/month.
So, having popped in to close my account and spend my £2.72, I end up £152.72 in debt increasing by £100 per month!!!!
How can this be?
