Laptop Memory upgrade configuration

I have a Samsung X05 (Pentium M 1.6Ghz) laptop with 512Mb RAm (2x 256)

It has 2 slots only and it can take up to 2GB.

I want to upgrade to 1GB (at least) to make it faster and was wondering:

- Should I buy 1GB and end up with 1.256GB (1 x 1GB and 1 x 256MB)
or
- Buy 1 GB stick and keep one slot empty
or
- Buy 2 x 512MB = 1GB in order to keep a pair

BTW I used Crucial to do a scan in order to determine the type of mem needed.. is this reliable?

Thanks.

Yes, the Crucial scan is reliable. Personally I'd buy a single 1Gb stick so you get maximum memory, it will probably cost less than 2 x 512Mb sticks, allows you to upgrade more cheaply in the future and, if there is a problem with the 2 sticks not matching then you still have 1Gb available.
  • No difference in price between 2 x 512MB and 1 x 1GB!

Will it be ok to use 1GB in one slot and 256MB in the other?
I read soemwhere that they have to be matching pairs..?

As far as possible yes, but those 'pairs' relate to the speed of the RAM, not the capacity.
  • ok, ordered a 1GB module and will keep 1 of the existing 256MB Total 1.256GB RAM

does the order of the module matter?
Should the 1GB be oin the first or second slot?
