standby saver

have just completed a energy usage questionnaire from brititsh gas web site, which reckons we can save £173 per year from simple things.

heating has just been turned down on each radiator.
boiling only water we need etc

now as much as I am full of good intentions with teenagers in the house,I can see an endless stream of nagging regarding things on standby..this report suggests a standby saver, which I guess is the thing on the british gas advert which says goodnight tv,goodnight laptop etc....

are they any good? and do they work around teenagers? dont want to spend money on one if going to be waste of time and only achieve same results as my useless nagging..
thanks

  • Well the infrared standby energy saver can be operated using any appliance that is controlled with an Infrared remote control. The Infrared unit works with your existing remote control and learns signals from it. Using the Standby Saver after a small delay the power to all devices is switched off. When switched back on using the Infrared remote, standby saver returns power to all the equipment so the standby saver basically realises that the computer, tv or whatever is plugged in are no longer being used and switches them off therefore even things that use 1w in standby mode will be switched off. Bear in mind, some older products like freeview boxes that I have heard about use similar amount of electricity when powered on and when in standby mode so its worth a shot and i`m sure the teenagers will understand.

you can get one of these magic standby saver plugs free. My dad has just got one so I might get to see what it does at the weekend.

Absolutely NO notion of how it works with teenagers. :rotfl:

What do people use these LIME energy saving plugs with. My tv only uses 1w, my pvr won't record if switched off at the mains, my video (yes still have one) loses its settings if switched off at the mains. My PC is already pluged into a powerdown so not needed there.

All other electrical devices don't have remote controls, so what do people use them for?
  • I use the savasocket which is a 6 way socket, 4 that allow you to plug items in which are usually left on standby and the other 2 are for items that need to be permanently on.
