Laptop start up problem

I have an Acer laptop with Windows XP Pro.
Sometimes when you switch on you get the password box up ok, you put password in and ok it and then it should load. It doesn't always do this, sometimes you are left with a blank screen and I end up having to take the battery out and re-start. When it re-starts it has to scan.
Any ideas what the problem is?
I have had a look at Acer and Microsoft websites but can't see anything that sounds like the problem I am having.

It might be a problem at startup, you could always eliminate some of the startup programs from running.
follow the instructions here if you have not already done this before
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
you'll notice a zippier machine afterwards too...

next time it happens, try ctrlaltdel, task manager, new task, explorer. Holding down the on/off button for 6 seconds should switch it off without pulling the battery out btw.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
