hi,

my car is due for its 4th year (06 Plate) service and MOT. The vauxhall dealers say its a "major service" and will cost around £320

I was trying to look around for cheaper and I came accross this

http://www.service-vauxhall.co.uk/

and the whole thing was quoted £252.65

Is this a normal price? (vauxhall zaifra, 2.2l petrol, automatic)

many thanks

Look in your service schedule and see what the dealer will do at the mileage, it is in your service book.

If the website compnany do all that is stated in the schedule then go for it.

But I haven't had a car serviced at a main dealer for years, and even then I did extra oil change mid service interval.

Bear in mind that your car needs good quality oil due to it having a chocolate camshaft, though from memory the gearbox is an older 4 speed rather than the fragile 6 speed tiptronic fitted to other Zafiras.

Personally I would just change the oil and filter every 6000, air filter every 12000, fuel filter every 24000, check the brakes twice a year, get the autobox fluid and filter, probably an internal filter on that box, every two years.

The only time I get my cars connected to a diagnostic computer is when they start using more fuel or have a drivability issue.

I did over 120k in a Subaru Legacy Auto in four years with my schedule, but I did take it to the main dealer occasionally when the warranty was in place, and used to tell them what needed doing under warranty.

Remember that a main dealer is more expensive than non franchised, and that thanks to EU rules you don't need to use them to keep the warranty valid, though yours is out of warranty now.

When it comes to selling on, a stamp is a stamp, not many people care who did the service, though a main dealer taking a car in on trade-in wiould rather have a car with main dealer history, but it doesn't make much of a difference on run of the mill cars.
