Restart your computer and run a full scan with Malwarebytes, update Malwarebytes first before scanning.

i have started to use registry mechanic,it seems to work very well.also i use trojan remover,i scan at least once a week,it seems to keep my puter working ok and it is now 7 years old.
would it not be better to turn off system restore and restart in safe mode to do a scan?

OK. this looks like better news...

Although it took slightly longer to run. Do you want me to try anything with HiJackThis?

    Yes, follow my instructions. :)

Don't worry about doing anything other than this at this stage.

I've tried HiJack this again, but it's as before. i just get a blank Notepad file.

The other thing I've noticed is that I'm now getting a popup from the system tray area that says some startup programs have been blocked. When I ask for details of these it lists 30 items of which Malwarebytes' Anti-malware is one. AVG is also there and some Toshiba stuff. I've no idea whether any of this is important of course!

It might well be that enough has been done. I'm happy to run the laptop for a period and see whether performance has improved. if it has then I have an older desktop PC, which is agonisingly slow, so I'll be doing the same with that.

Enough midnight oil burned. Working late tomorrow so wont catch any replies until 8pm at the earliest.

Once again, thanks for all your help.

Still some work to be done. It could be the Windows Defender is blocking the items. But it shouldn't.

You can take a look for yourself to see if it is blocking any items and report back here.

Need to see the Hijack This log.
Perhaps you are not following the instructions correctly. Look here.

If you do buy more RAM, which you should, buy it through 'Crucial', just google for it.
It will scan your computer and suggest the RAM you need.

Very very easy to install, just make sure you listen for the click as the RAM gets seated.
Full installation details provided by Crucial as well.
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.

Do not buy it through Crucial. This is a money saving website, not a 'Brain Dead' website.

I have already created links to suitable RAM.
