Someone Please Help

My parents had a cold call to their home phone where someone (itcdevcorp) was selling something that they said was on behalf of EDF energy, stupidly my father believed them and gave them his Barclaycard number after being told by itcdevcorp it would be a one off payment of £99 only.

I happened to pop round a couple of minutes after he got off the phone and instantly realised his mistake and got him to ring Barclaycard to cancel his card and issue him with a new one, as soon as he had finished canceling the card itcdevcorp rang back and said they were unable to take payment, My father just put the phone down at that point and thought the matter had been dealt with.

A few days latter he received his new card and to his and my astonishment it had exactly the same number as the card he previously canceled. So he rang to tell them of their mistake and was informed that payment had now been taken by itcdevcorp so he canceled his card (again) and said he'd be disputing the payment, eventually he received a new card with a new number as well as his statement and the dispute form.

When the dispute form arrived it stated that not only had the £99 been taken but that it was a recurring payment with itcdevcorp that he had never agreed to. So he rings again to cancel the recurring payment to be told his is unable to cancel such payments and has to contact the merchant, whilst on the phone to Barclaycard he cancels his card with them altogether.

As instructed by Barclaycard he rings the merchant and spends 30 minutes + on the phone to them and they assure him over and over again that it is not a recurring payment and is only a one time payment, this despite the fact they originally wanted him to set up a direct debit and Barclaycard informing me that it is a recurring payment. Basically they said not to worry and it was a fault on Barclaycards part.

So to summarise they have taken the £99 from his original card that was canceled, he then canceled the second card that they sent him which had the exact same number and he has canceled the third card they sent him and closed his account altogether.

He sent all this information to Barclaycard as well as filling out their dispute form and providing them with all the info they requested, now today he recieves a letter back asking him to supply them with the "due date of the cancellation".

I have no idea what this is and as such don't know what information they are requesting. Frankly the letter back from Barclaycard is a joke IMO.

Someone please help, thanks.

DF. :)

If it is a recurring payment Barclaycard cannot do anything, you have to deal with merchant directly and even if Barclaycard issue you with a new card with a new number, Barclaycard still have to honour payment if requested by the merchant. The problem here is that your father handed over his credit card in good faith. What were they trying to sell him?

They sold him a device that plugs in and some how saves you money on your electricity bill, it doesn't even fit into a normal plug socket as it is to big and hits the switch.

We've spoken to Barclaycard and they have confirmed that now my father has canceled his card and his account with them altogether if this company try and take further payment they won't be able to.

Also as I said in my original post this could and should of been stopped after we initially contacted Barclaycard, they canceled the card then reissued him with the exact same details so its as much their fault.

Basically all I want to know is what is this "due date of the cancellation" they are requesting so I can get back to them ASAP.

Had to contact Barclaycard about this by phone as I had no idea what info they wanted. Turns out they wanted the date that the merchant was contacted and asked to cancel the recurring payment, of course as already explained the scammers denied it was recurring.

Anyway we gave them the info over the phone and were told it would be put on the system, I also sent the infoby post. Asked again whilst on the phone if these scammers try and take further payment will they be able to, I was assured that they won't.

That aside I was round my parents today and things have taken a nasty turn.

An indian woman phoned this afternoon, she said she was calling from TPS (telephone preference service) and wanted to help stop nuisance calls.

My father asked her for a contact number and she gave me the following, 020300994930099,this instantly concerned him and he told her that she isn't who she claims to be and he won't be giving her any details, he asked her to stop calling as well.

At this point she started going off on one saying "you can call BT, the police but I'll still keep on calling", he told her to leave them alone and in the process said **bleep**, she said "we already have your details and will take whatever we like", she then proceeded to reel off the number of the original Barclaycard that was canceled. My father told her the card had been canceled and he no longer had an account with Barclaycard, they also know all about what you're doing and will block any attempts anyway.

She didn't seem to understand this and kept saing "no not your bank card your credit card" to which he kept saying "ITS BEEN CACELED". Then she went back to saying I'll keep ringing you and BT/the police will never be able to trace me, he said that if she does we'll just answer it and leave it on the side and ignore them, she said thats fine sir you waste your time.

Eventually she said "If you regret saying that bad word I'll regret calling you and I won't call again", so he said in a sarcastic way he was sorry and she then apologized and said she wouldn't call again and said goodbye.

Since then they have had a male with an indian accent trying the same thing ring up.

So not only do we have the original problem with Barclaycard it seems these evil people will keep ringing over and over again. Have been on the BT forums but they have been of little use so far.

Sadly your father is going to have to change his phone number as well. Contacting BT to resolve a problem is like trying to put out the sun using a fire extinguisher they are completely useless and are interested only in their profit margins.

I know your pain. About a year ago my girlfriend got a call asking her if she was intrested in a discounted holiday. She didn't have to decide then and there, but to reserve the option they wanted a few digits from her debit card (I know, silly she gave them up, but she figured as they only wanted a partial number, they couldn't do anything with it anyway). Somehow they got the rest of the number and about an hour later drained her account. We cancelled the debit card and got a new number and the bank was fantastic and got every penny back, but now we get calls from India on an almost daily basis. We're still stuck in contract with BT till April and they want 130 pounds if we cancel now, so we have to put up with the calls till then, at which point we're going to get a new line and number with Sky.

Can insult them all you like, hang up the instant they start talking, they just don't get the message that it will work a second time and keep on trying.

No you don't - you can ask them to change your number for a #10 fee.

Also recent OFCOM guidelines forced BT to charge only two pounds for each month left of the contract if you cancel - the call centre don't know it yet but if the final bill charges more than this you can call them, point out the new OFCOM guideline, and they will refund the difference back to your phone account.

    Happy days!

  • So I sent Barclaycard the information they requested last week and have just rang them to ask how long it will be before we hear back from them. The man was most unhelpfull and said hecouldn't say, instead he informed me that we had been asked to provide them with a "due date of cancellation" which I told him I'd already done by phone and post to which he just said we'll be in touch shortly.

So how long is it likely to be before we hear back about the dispute?

I also asked him if he could put anything on the system to say that I never want the account open again, he said he could and he'd do it now, but there were no keyboard taps and it sounded to me like he just wanted to get off the phone.
  • My father had a call from a woman who said she was from Barclaycard (she was english) and asked him for his middle initial, he said he wasn't comfortable giving info to her so she gave him her number and name (01452823753/Pat Hooton).

My mum then checked the number on google and it came back OK.

Rang back and she said she was just calling to apologies about the dispute with itcdevcorp and it was a mistake on their part that it showed up as being recurring, she said itcdevcorp never had the power to start a recurring payment and they wouldn't be able to take any further money and even if they tried Barclaycard would be able to block it, added to that the account is closed anyway.

She said she wanted to apologies because the information he'd been given over the phone and by letter was wrong due to other people in the disputes department not looking into the matter fully and just assuming it was a genuine recurring payment.

She said she couldn't offer a refund as he did receive the goods but she was going to give him £40 for the mistake on their part. She couldn't credit it back to his account as its closed so asked if ** - ** - ** was still his sort code and asked him to confirm his account number. He'll receive a statement showing the £40 credit and it will be in the account in 5 days. I'll be keeping an eye on the account to make sure nothing goes out.

    Does that sound genuine?

Fingers crossed thats sorted, if so great. Other good news as well.

Last Tuesday I said to my mum the next time the scammers ring up and ask for Dad she should just tell them he's dead. So she did and they haven't called since. :D
